Technical Road Draft Tube Question...

Hey guys, got a quick question for you...

I will admit, I am not really a Chevy guy, but I bought a 36 Chevy 2 dr Sedan that has a '67 283 in it. The road draft tube is still on the back of the block behind the distributor. I do have a PCV valve in one of the valve covers also.

What is the best way to plug this tube? I know that it would probably be better to remove it completely and plug the block, but in the mean time, what are ways this has been done?

 

With out it plugged your probably pulling dirty air into the motor through the draft tube with the PCV hooked up.

 

That's why I am asking how others have plugged it. I know it needs it.

 

Mine is plugged with a brass freeze plug.

 

I've seen rubber expansion plug's if you can't get a freeze plug in...

 

How about one of the rubber expandable freeze plugs? You could plug the end of the tube in place or remove the tube and plug the block. If you do this with a PCV in a valve cover you need to vent the other cover to the air cleaner for cross flow.

Seems to me it would be easier to remove the tube. Put the PCV in place of the tube, and then put a breather where the PCV was. You can do all this without jacking up the car and crawling under it.

 

There’s a elbow that takes the place of the road draft tube (has the center bolt also). Bolt that on, run an in-line pcv to the carb and ditch the valve cover one. This way you can run solid valve covers.....don’t forget the breather cap for oil fill tube.

 

Can I run a breather cap on both sides by doing it this way?? This is what’s in the block right now.

Keep that and run an inline pcv to the carburetor, like oldtimer said.

 

Hold on...That one slipped by me. 67 283 would have a PCV..Not a road draft tube..Back to 63, and '59 in Ca. I think.

The later blocks had a tube from the valve cover to the air cleaner.

 

Do not plug the road draft tube !! Take a piece or 1/2" or 3/4" hose and run it back as far as you want (mine is just before the rear bumper) and install a K & N filter on it. The motor's crankcase needs as source of air at idle, and when you are off idle the PCV valve is closed and the exit route for the blow by is through the road draft tube ..... without it you will be pressurizing the crank case and that is bad ...........

Op say's he's running breathers out of the valve covers.

 

I fessed up to that right at the beginning. Not afraid to admit it.
