drag racin has gone down hill ever since buddy holly died?????????? but i still build em and still race em and still like it . we have tracks all over oklahoma all within an hour or two of okc...........is this a great state or what??
Ark City. I lived in Winfield back in 70-74. Cliff Gotlieb, myself and a group of about 7-8 of us got the strip opened there by meeting with the Mayor and then the city council. It was a very rough surface back then and you had to watch for airplanes...they would shoot take-offs and landings on Sunday sometimes. Pretty freaky....
Instead of *****ing... go here and promote the new strip and motorsports park they want to build out here. There is also talk about putting one in at Altamont.... which I'm about 20 minutes from. Racing is alive and well... we just need to promote it. http://www.rmpracing.com/ Sam.
the more bums on seats = more dollars and facilities...... The multi use deals seem to be the best value for money as there can bew running some kind of racing all the time, I think Sears Point was/is one of the better looking facilities I have checked out, drag strip, circuit and some workshops looked to me like a good idea, out in the sticks a bit too (like most places were before the urban sprawl) might need to park one in the middle of a national park or something to make sure you don't get complaining neighbours somewhere along the line, we still have folks here who think they can move into an area and complain about a 70+ year old speedway next door, I think at last count there is 1 resident there longer then the track..... I figure you moved in later then its your problem.
I heard this "rumor" bout some crazy ***es out in Missouri or Kansas or somewhere round there who were so into keeping traditional drag racing alive that their popularity and drive started catching the attention of some big cats like Don Garlitts. And when they werent in the middle of nowhere they brought their enthusiasm back to where ever the hell else they may live... Bet guys like that could keep drag racing alive...
I know the Milan, MI quarter has been doing weekends since I can't remember. Martin Dragway across the state has an IHRA-spec pavement base they just finished two years ago, and I think it will be a stop for that series. Places like Detroit Dragway have long since closed due to developers, but I hear they're doing the quarter at Lapeer. Though I haven't been, lots of guys from work do the test and tune and run anything from an early-80s Cadillac to the older stuff. Two guys at work have a 65 LeMans, and one has a sick 64 Fury with a second-mortgaged Hemi mill. I love hearing about stuff like that-even better when it's local. Gotta keep the gr***roots things goin.
The nostalgia/traditional wave will keep Drag Racing going....the Pros will always be there,,,,,and they all dig the cackle cars which is very cool.
Our local track is all tied up in court. It's supposed to be running this year, but after that who knows. The indian casino next to it really wants to build a golf course. they have unlimited resources, and pay no taxes. I think were screwed.
