Put the drill on counter clock wise and put some moderate force and it will work like a charm.

Me thinks you'll just as well unravel in reverse as well...

Only way I know is to cut with utility knife before starting.

I install wires for a living and seeing a 10' string of new carpet disappear from the floor as it wraps around the bit is not good.

I use a hot soldering iron to melt the hole through.Leaves a sealed edge.

Used to use a length of cut off coat hanger to drill holes through house carpeting to locate floor register locations.....probably won't work on a steel car floor...just an X with a utility knife, drill in the center....

A 3/8" hole punch from Tandy Leather would make a nice clean hole.

  8. I was thinking the same thing.Back the metal up with a piece of wood & punch the rug.

Stepped drill bits work for me...Twist bits grab the carpet... Stepped bits didn't seem too bad....EVILT

i use leather / gasget punches with a peice of 1/2 plywood under it. gives a nice clean hole. soldering iron works great but the smell ****s.

  15. Yeah it stinks when melted but theres always a chance of a fire,or someone getting blistered.(dont we all like the danger factor?)Soldering irons will get ya if youre not careful, but a very useful tool.

You can cut the carpet with utility knife, and then use a short piece of s**** tubing inserted into the slit to drill thru.

Yup, a solder iron is what I use too. It's simple and gets the job done.

I've also done the rug unraveling deal and here's what i've learned that works. Find the hole location and use a very thin punch and pierce the carpet and the floor. Then take a long tapered punch and continue to open up the hole to the desired dia. After you get the hole to size go under the floor with a disc grinder and remove the flared metal that was punched out of the way. Be careful to pull the carpet up while doing the grinding as it will smolter from the grinding. You now have the correct size hole and an unmolested carpet.
