I've mentioned it here before but I thinkit got overlooked - www.live365.com and search for surf or rockabilly, or anything else that tweeks your nipples. This is an internet radio site that runs very low bandwidth that doesn't download any goofy programs like limewire does and most (99%) of the 'stations' are FREEEEEEE! I listen to Surfmusic.com and Kilgore's Snack Stand on there all day.

    My favorites are:
The Sunrays (I live for the sun--Andrea)
    Castaways (Liar Liar)
    Sandy Nelson (Drums A go-Go)
    Sufaries (Surfer Joe, Wipeout)
    The Chantays (pipeline)
    and a lot more

  4. Do yourself a big favor and get anything by Los Straitjackets!!!! Especially their live CD. If you ever get a chance to see them live don't miss it. Live music as good as it gets! Funny guys too. Their new drummer, Jason is a car guy, mild custom 57 Chevy and 32 coupe. Their albums don't have 2-3 good tunes, it's all good.

Dan beat me to it, but I felt compelled to second his suggestion. If "Man Or Astro Man?" manages to fall short in capturing that "60's vibe" you're after (which would be unlikely), they more than make up for it with their use of 1950's sci-fi B-movie sound bites. It's hard to recommmend only ONE album, but "Experiment Zero" is chock full o' trad, surf guitar goodness. And after ten years of heavy rotation, I'm surprised my copy hasn't worn out.

Makes me miss Lil' Steven's Underground Garage, used to play it locally on KXGO, now he's on XM. Need to get XM. Hmmmm: ex-emmm....
Insect Surfers. A great surf band from L.A., saw them in college years ago, anyone know if they're still around?

The Mermen out of SF are really good. Seen them a few times live. Don't know about anything recent, but the older records I have are excellent.

I've been listening to instrumental and surf music quite a bit lately. Los Straitjackets are great, never get tired of the Ventures either. Also discovered a new found appreciation for the Trashmen. Stevie Ray Vaugn did a Pipeline that's hard to beat and don't forget the GREATEST instrumental of all times--Duane Eddy/Rebel Rouser.

JFA's version of Baja is also one of my favorites.

As for local Phoenix surf bands, The Badda Bings are pretty damn good.

Man>or<Astroman! Yes, you guys know. I also dig the Bomboras, the Trashwomen (was this band a spoof, Jonny Bartlett), Impala, I'm sure I'm missing a mess load of bands too, when Estrus had some good bands along with Dionsysus (?) record label in the early 90's

Here's my latest band project The Thunderchiefs:
    http://www.myspace.com/thethunderchiefs

We got this deal going the end of last year and it's turned into a decent band.
    Traditional Surf stuff.
We hit the stuido mid month to record our first album.
    Sure having fun with it.

Best part of starting a surf band is hiring go-go girls!

This label has been putting out alot of good stuff over the years and this summer they have been doing alot of surf and drag stuff.

The Rat Fink albums are being reissued by them later this summer...all three of them.

  21. Get the following comps:

    - Lost Legends of Surf Guitar (Vols. 1 to 4)
    - Strummin' Mental (Vols. 1 and 2)
    - Cowabunga! The Surf Box Set (3 disk collection)

These will keep you happy for a while. Lots of good info already listed too.

To answer a question about The Trashwomen, no they were not a spoof. 3 girls out of the bay area in the mid 90's: Elka (guitar), Danielle (bass), and Tina (drums). They put out two LP's: Deep Space and Spend The Night. My band currently practices in Elka's former bedroom. :)

And since others are pimpin' their surf sound, then I will to. We have one instro posted here. Heh, and its a Trashwomen cover:

Ventures for me. I can live on that stuff alone. They are really an instrumental band and not surf, but I think it all kinda crosses over anyway.

This boxed set is pretty good. The more current stuff (last disc in box) is not my fav but is well worth getting.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...r=11-1/ref=sr_11_1/102-5690019-8187301?n=5174

Old is always better, but there are some new bands really getting the sound you are looking for.

Mike listed alot of them above.

Just a few of the new stuff I like

    Ghastly Ones
    Dynotones
    Los Straitjackets
    Satan Pilgrims

Boss Martians sing but capture that early hot rod song sound. Just their early stuff. They have went 180 degrees the opposite direction now.

    Check the Del Fi website.
They have put original stuff back out on CD now.All are worth having.
    Hollywood Drag
    Hotrodders Choice
    Drag Beat.

Krupanut, cant wait to here the new band. Where ya getting those horizontal striped shirts at? I can't find those anywhere anymore. They all have fancy collars now.Been looking for awhile, even at the thrift stores.

Are the Sir Finks still together down there. Never got there 2nd cd but loved the first. Never got to see them at any of the Roundups they played either. Somthing always delayed me getting there or just missed them.

There is plenty out there to find and listen too.I could go on all day but I'm stopping here.
