Just found a 427 side oiler for sale and thinking about buying it for my '63.5 Galaxie replacing my brand new built 390. I have a little Buick 231 in my '34 three window now and was thinking about replacing it with the 390. Anyone running an FE motor in a '34? Wondering how it fits and if the weight is too much.
You would have to change or cut the firewall. A 35/36 ford pickup/truck firewall works really well. Put the 427 in the coupe leave that 390 where it's at
Have 427 SO in my 31 Model A. Used Pete and Jakes spring and Super Bell axle. Have 8000K + miles on the car so far with no issues. The FE is not as heavy as folks say, especially if you get rid of the stock 90 pound intake. I recessed my firewall 5 inches just to move the engine back some but the FE is no longer than a BBC. Im even running a clutch so all the naysayers that speak of the FE's massive size are just misinformed IMO. Id stick the 427 in the coupe as well, just saying. I ran iron heads forever on the 427 but am changing to BBMs, so aluminum heads will also reduce engine weight if you are overly concerned.
Where does this myth keep coming from??? An FE with an aluminum intake and iron heads weighs LESS than an all iron SBC. The FE was the first engine produced utilizing thin wall casting techniques. Of course, this limits the over bore capabilites, and core shift can be a problem, but it kept the blocks weight down considerably. Dave Schuten's Iron Orchid does just fine with an FE.
Looks cool. A Ford in a Chevy! Well maybe, is it registered as a Chevy or a Ford? A '34 Ford has VIN/SN on frame.
they actually fit pretty good. The first picture is when I had the 427 in it with full hood. Stock length. It drove just fine! That bullshit about to heavy to big. Comes from the everyone do the same thing guys! I won’t say who! If you need more detailed pics just look for The Burrows Coupe. I had mine sitting high in the saddle. Which is not even necessary. I would just run the big pan that is flatter on bottom. Good luck!
