I got a 62 cadillac I've been driving for work almost every day while my daily driver gets fixed. She's running smooth, got a fan shroud for her, new spark plugs, she runs great when cold except if i'm in traffic for too long for almost 30-40 mins once i hit a stop light my car stalls. I have not yet replaced the spark plug wires, but other than that I'm wondering why my car would stall. Note my car has an edelbrock 1406 carb.
Does the carb have a working choke? Is it adjusted properly? After 5 or 10 minutes of driving from a cold start the choke valve should be fully open. If it isn't it may be running too rich and flooding out at idle. Make sure the air cleaner or any other linkages or vacuum hoses or fuel lines aren't interfering with the throttle or choke linkages. Look for split or leaking vacuum hoses while you're poking around in there.
Perhaps the idle speed screw could be the problem .... or those mixture screws sticking out the front ?
Where is the choke valve? I'll have to see if it's open. I do notice my muffler leaves a black spot on the ground wonder if it is running too rich
Well I just installed a fan shroud and thermostat at 160 degrees so the car is pretty cool almost at 1/4 on the temp gage. The hood is missing the heat insulation tho
That's what I was wondering. I mean it does idle perfect but once it's warmed up I notice it stalls if u stop really fast
It's the flap or door in the bowl cover above the primary throttle bores only. Sometimes called a "****erfly". It's shown here in the closed, cold start position. The valve should open vertically as the engine warms up.
If it's too rich at idle, the choke adjustment is just one possible culprit. Could be a sunk or mis-adjusted float, excessive fuel pressure, trash in the needle and seat, etc. Next time you have it idling with the hood open, remove the air cleaner and fully open the choke valve. Look down into the primary throttle bores and see if you notice liquid fuel dripping off the main nozzles or out of the vent tubes. Are you running the stock mechanical fuel pump or have you added an electric fuel pump by chance?
