Question, removing starter (entire part) to replace with a Powermaster 12 volt. Do I need to remove the entire starter plate or get a bigger hammer? I have all bolts removed and can get screw driver behind plate. Seems the starter is mated to it or stuck - cannot pull it out. Thoughts/ Pictures? Thank You
The starter plate stays on the engine. Do not remove. The starter is fastened to the plate with 2 long 5/16" bolts thru the length of the starter. The bolts only need to be unscrewed from the plate, not removed from the starter. There might be an additional support at the front of the starter under the head of one of the bolts to one of the pan bolts. If so, remove the pan bolt. Now remove the starter.
Also note that the cam drive and gear hook in behind the flywheel...you must tilt the starter nose UP and INward toward block to get it out. The bolts you remove leave the starter free to dis***emble itself as it comes out, so grip the pieces carefully or try to get a nut on the bolts when starter is just a bit forward.
