I have a chance to buy a engine, auto tranny, steering box, column and rear end center section out of 56 pontiac. I am thinking of swapping it into my 51 Pontiac. I would love to hear what anyone thinks. Any advice would be appreciated. I think it would be a nice period correct swap. Sent from my SM-G935V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app

I agree it would be a nice period swap but if I remember correctly the '56 Pontiacs had a lame automatic transmission. I you could scrounge the parts ('55 hydro bellhousing and torus) and if your old Hydro works OK, it might be better (and easier) to mate the '56 316 to the existing drive train. Your current rear end should be fine with the V8.
Some 56 Pontiacs had the dual range (good) hydro. If you have access to the donor car, check the shift indicator on the steering column. If it does not have a PARK indicator it has the good dual range hydro, assuming the car has not been "messed" with.
