What temperature is your thermostat supposed to open at? I tend to use 180 degree F thermostats here in southern AZ. I would not start worrying too hard at this point, if the temperature keeps climbing after you pass the thermostat opening temperature (like 20 or more degrees). Another quick thought, after the engine cools down, check your coolant levels, there might be an air bubble in the engine that needed to be driven out?
Just bought and installed a 190 thermostat,maybe it was the bubble thing,i just added a gal of antifreeze.. A shroud would hurt and maybe get it timed..
Straight antifreeze does not transfer the heat out of the block well. 100% water works much better, but, (there is always a but) water freezes and your block, radiator and water pump need the protective chemicals in the antifreeze. 50/50 mix is "traditional" and 70% water/ 30% antifreeze transfers more heat - ASSuming that it does not get too far below freezing. If you love your engine and raditor, do not use tap water. The minerals end up plugging the radiator and heater core. Distilled (not "purified") water is cheap at the dollar store/grocery store/Walmart.
oGonna sow some wild oats soon! Sorry 130/ 140. I just added 3 gallos of antifreeze but still got super hot in minutes... Maybe i need a 180 thermostat? Or no thermostat at all?
Just a few quick thoughts before I go to bed. Don’t run without the thermostat. Three gals of anitfreeze sounds like too much. Use at least 50% water in the mix. Check the timing. Retarded timing = runs hot. After doing that, if it’s still getting that hot just idling, you prob have an air flow issue. I can’t remember seeing what you did for a fan/shroud. Good nite, hambers, I gotta go save the world again in the morning.
you have a later model block center bolt hole valve covers... what year water pump did you use with the V belts?
Good question.. I think i used an early style,,,i bought it new for my other project that had a 70s sbc... So yeah maybe i fucked up on the pump... Do they sell a newer pump with out the serpentine pulley? Thanks
I think I used? LMAO If you used the later pump with the Vbelts that's your problem spinning the pump the wrong way. If not to bad to get to I would try to change the pump out to the correct one. Anything pre 85 will work

I wish the fucker would run cooler. I did check the advance by moving the dist clockwise or counterclock, You helped me with a bigass coe hood that was fun!!thank you. The second run is when i noticed that it was overheating, My son was excited as i was, he thinks it would be "badass" if i pick him up from school with it.
Set the timing to 10 degrees or so with the vacuum advance unhooked, then rev it up a bit, if the timing moves up the mechanical advance is working, then let it down to idle and hook up the vacuum hose, if the timing jumps ahead a ways, the vacuum advance is working. This is not precision tuning; but generally will let you know if stuff is working or not. If the timing is too far retarded or the vacuum advance not working, it will bring on heat when puttering around.

I took the water pump off,looks like a regular early water pump to me The mechanical fan was like 4" away from radiator so i will move it closer,will try to make a shroud even tho it will be a pita.. Then eventually try the vacuum advance trick.. I really need to learn how to use a timing light.
did play with it yesterday. I installed an exhaust system on saturday,moved the radiator back almost 4",added 2 gallons of water instead of antifreeze,installed a 180 degree thermostast with a plugged bypass, new carburator diaphram and switched the front split ring wheels with 60 yeard old tires with some newer radials. I got it to idle for like 10 minutes with no issues,it was even running a little cold,around 170. Then I put it in gear,drove around the block again This time it kept cool until I messed with the distributor,then realized I was drivin with the parking brake engaged,no brake light fuse,which means my AOD didnt either. when it was time to back intothe garage in a small slope,it got hot and went up to 240.. I will play with it today. Its not as noisy now,no fuel leaks,a little of water leak around the upper hose,gotta tighten the PS belt and other minor issues
Do you have a "surround" to direct the air from the grille opening directly into the radiator? If not, with that extra 4" space, the air may be going around the radiator instead of through it. Sent from my SM-G892A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Yes..hopefully it was that ebrake and messing with the dist that made it hot...i dont like chasing stuff lik that.. Im gonna take it out to mess with it...maybe install seat belts today
