I just bought a new car Monday (see pic) and the bias ply whitewalls are yellow. Any idea how to whiten them up? Thanks, Mike

Try AJAX cleanser on a rag or brush.

Never use Bleach white!, If you do dont get a drop on your wheels, it eats them up bad.

We use Lemon Fantastik with a brush (lemon works the best i dont know why.) on the Radir Dragster slick whitewalls here on the cars at the shop.

FYI, after you get clean, I use a good coat of Future Floor Wax to keep them looking good for months.

Good to know. I was just about to write you and ask what you recommend. I've got your 15x8.20 slicks on my truck and LOVE them. What kind of mileage should I be getting out of these things? I've heard some really low numbers and I've got about 1000 miles on them, and other than being dirty, they look great.

Get your girlfriend to do it. All the ones I've found were good on their knees, and they know how to use all those 'cleanin'-chemicals, anyway. :D

Yes...bleach-white will mark up painted wheels. I've used SOS pads...or 0000 steel wool with soap in the past.

I've found Bleche-White works very well for cleaning off yellow and curb scuffs, but it definitely causes the whitewalls to craze and check over time. I might use it for a one-time cleanup on a newly acquired car, but I'd switch over to SOS or cleanser on a scrub brush for the long haul.

  13. Coker says to never use Bleach-white 'cause it'll crack the whitewalls. Of course, they recommend their Coker WWW cleaner. Anyone used it?

    Is that a true Impala?

I don't recall seeing a two-door with chrome around the side windows like that...and the chrome spear on the side looks like Bel-Air trim...the whole car just doesn't look right to me for some reason...explain please.

    Thanx,
    R-

Bleach white will crack the white wall. It also discolors them as well turning them a yellowish color, at least it did on both sets of whites i used it on..
When i bought my diamont backs, they recommend sos pads, and if you want a cleaner use a water/simple green mix, or a non bleach cleaner like the fantastic that was mentioned earlier.

I've cleaned the whites on my 53 using billo pads, or SOS, and not only do they clean up great, but there's also no cracking, and they stay cleaner longer with NO yellowing at all.
And thats after a year and a couple thousand miles..

One time about twenty years back I was visting a friend and when I went outside to leave his old man was going over the wide white on the back of my Harley bobber with a rag and brake fluid. I had never before cleaned it and I couldn't believe how freakin white he made it. I'm sure you wouldn't want to get it on your paint and I'm not sure what it might do to the rubber.

The best thing i've found is one of those yellow sponges with the green scrubber on one side, and dish-washing soap.Works like a charm!

I use it, it works great. Its a bit expensive, but I just used up my bottle after a year. Ive used bleach white in the past, the Coker stuff definately works a little better, in addition to their claims of it not hurting the rubber like bleach white may.

  23. Cool, thanks...the shop threw some in when I bought my WWWs, but I haven't used it yet. It's probably just liquid Ajax!

Its smell doesnt resemble any cleaning agent I have ever come across, so I doubt it. Im definately going to try some Ajax though, as I dont have any more of the Coker stuff, and by the time you order it through mail, its like $15 for that damn bottle.

Back in the 50's we always used SOS pads. It really works
fine. Many of the cars went to auto shows and the white wall tires looked great.

I can't tell what kind of tires you have, but certain brands yellow really easily... I always use Simple Green and if they're the ones that like to yellow with a few days, lacquer thinner is your friend.

I use this stuff called Bar Keepers Friend and a red scotchbrite pad. My wife buys it to do the dishes.
