What final gear are you guys running in the rear end with your period 3 speed, BW overdrive trans? Just wondering how low I can go in ratio. Currently running 3.78's and I feel like I can pull a stump out of the ground lol. Not yet tested at highway cruise yet (need to get front end lined up) but the OD works like it should on all of these back roads.
My brother in-law had a 1952 Ford with the original 3 spd/OD transmission and it was running 4.10 in the rear. Went like hell and performed well on the hwy in OD.
Lots of variables to consider, but if you go to a 4.10 rear you are loosing 8.4% of your 30% overdrive. If you want acceleration, that is the way to go. Years ago I had a '50 and added overdrive and kept my standard 3.78 rear. It was a wonderful combination. On the other hand, my '55 has a 3.25 rear with a .68 5-speed overdrive. Although it runs well at 55 mph and up, it is a dog in 5th below that. I would love to exchange it for something around 3.78.
My wagon has pretty low gears. I'd say around 4.11. Has great low end and cruises nice at 70 with the overdrive.
My 52 is originally a Ford-o-matic car, now with a BW OD. It has what I believe are 3:90's(best I can figure without pulling the third member) and it does well all around, but I'd like 3:55's or 3:73's. I'd like a little less rpm on the highway(~2300@65).
