Does anyone make vintage-looking license plates? I have modern California plates on my '30 Ford and would like to find someone that makes license plates that look like 1930 CA plates...same shape and width, etc., and have them use the number on my modern plates. Any suggestions? Has anyone ever done this? Thanks y'all.

SafariKnut has made several custom painted plates that look JUST like old plates but are actually hand painted... they look all 3D and everything. i've got one that looks like a 1960 Michigan plate that he made for me that says "SIKPHUK". it hangs on the wall here in my office and everyone that sees it sure that it is real and can not figure out how i got such a plate. eventually i tell them to take a REALY close look and it still usually takes them a while to realise that it is painted and not stamped.

you should PM him and talk to him about making you the plate you want... i believe he has been running a painted kustom plate on his Pontiac Safari for YEARS.

I have seen the ones that he paints, look really good. I do want stamped ones though. I am sure there are some legal issues but I would rather do that than spend a bunch on "clear" plates and have to go back to the DMV. Any help with this would be sweet...thanks a lot you guys.

All Daves plates ARE original Ca. plates, he also has original non restored plates also. Either way are are going to have to make sure that the plates are DMV clear on your own. read the section on his website about YOM(year of manufacture) This fill will in any "blanks" you might have.

I am sure his plates are clear and quite nice(I have called him before about plates, pricing, etc...he seemed quite nice and helpful), I have looked into the YOM/DMV route in the past and just wanted to explore other options just out of curiosity. I almost think it would be easier just to have tags made than buy a pair of originals for a couple hundred and have to go back to DMV.

Since what you are wanting to do isn't exactly legal anyway, why not just keep your real, current plate in the trunk and run a swap meet YOM plate? I've done that with a bunch of my Vespas and a couple of my cars.

Look in an old Hemmings, the front color pages. There is a company in Florida that stamps these from aluminum. They'll do any number you want but they don't have every year blank. Check to see if they have your year. I've never been stopped with these. You'd think all cops would know personalized tags were not available in 1956 but I don't give them any reason to check me over closely.

I have my legal tags mounted on magnets covered with duct tape. I pop it on the trunk lid when traveling just like the used car salesmen do for their demo rides... sometimes:eek::D

Try euro-sign.com, but you may have to use a out of state addressfor they willnot send plates to Calif.

  15. I used LicencePlates.TV for French plates with my Illinois number on them. They also have CA plates, as well as every other state and most other countries. Plates look right on, and fit my car's licence space exactly.
Yes, they are not "legal", but I've only been stopped once, and then only to get yelled at/told to put the IL plate in the back window. It fell down within the mile...I keep it next to the spare...

thats the way we HAVE to do it here in NC. you can run your YOM plates no problem. or any "old" plates that may be fitting. you just have to keep the plates you were issued and your registration in the car at all times. they just made this the rule. i did it for years before they made it ok. NEVER had a problem. do this and if you get pulled show them your real tag and tell them you just took it to a show and forgot to swap the tags back. 99.99% of cops will be cool with that. the other .01% are not cool with anything...ken....

I am just going to run a junker '30 plate and keep the legit stuff in the car with me...done it in the past so I guess it won't hurt. Thanks for all the suggestions...

  22. first off that isn't legal at all, second no one makes the '55 and older plates (longer one), also the new plates you buy are aluminum. your best off just buying some yom plates 1930 plates are cheap compaired to the '47 and '51s. you can buy some at the swapmeets for around $50-$100 a pair for un-restored with one good one (don't run the front). besides the new #'s on california plates look false on old plates, most new plates have 7 #'s and the old ones have 6 and are in the ** ** ** format so you can't use 7.

  23. if you good with a 000 tip torch you can make another one and go legit. go to the swap find another 30 plate for $5, find another plate with most of the same #'s as you original one for $5 and start cutting and welding.

  24. There is a guy in San Diego named RayRay...no ****, I'll look up his number in my files unless anyone else has it handy. He will make you a CA plate as long as you have the current CA Reg for said plate...I have CA black plates made from my personalized CA plates and they look great, he also did a 1950 plate for my woody. Very nice guy and great work.

I would like to talk to this guy...seems like plates back to the fifties is kinda easy to find someone who makes them. Back to the 20's and 30's is a little more difficult. Like I said before, I don't really want to go the YOM route. If anything, if I can't find someone who reproduces these I will just use an old plate and keep the legit ones in the car...thanks a lot.
