I was given a stack of masonary disks for my four and a half and since I ran out and wanted to get the rest of the body to frame bolts out out the Dodge so I could get the body off I stupidly elected to use one instead of going to town and getting some metal disks. Well to make a long story real short it came apart and the grinder did a 180 in the air and came back down still running on my right hand and wrist before it took off across the inside of the car and I was able to unplug it. Never again will I use these things even tho they are made by Makita. I am on Plavix waiting for surgury on Wednesday and now I have these huge bandages on my right hand (thanks to Doctor Mammah) and I have to explain them to all the Doctors at the VA Hopital on Tuesday. At least I was on the last bolt and the top came off when the disk came apart so the body is loose. If you have any of these disks laying around use them only on you cinder blocks not your metal stuff. Gumpa

sorry to hear that, it is not uncommon to use the wrong tool when working on your rod, some time it work and some times it do not, take care of your self, and get well soon.

  4. As long as the body is off... Hope you heal up soon.

I had the trigger lock on so it didn't shut off when it took off. Gumpa

Those wheels can be used on hard metals. We smoothed out some lumps on cast iron exhaust manifolds a while ago with them. They are a silcone carbide wheel (you can tell by the green marking on them). I think when it comes to grinding people tend to know what to do and what not to do, but not why.
For those who don't know there are two major types of wheels, silicone carbide, and aluminim oxide, all silicone carbide wheels will be marked with green, or the wheel itself will be green, all others are aluminium oxide. Only ever use a silicone carbide wheel on hard metals or it will glaze over and explode. That thing must have been humming before it went. Consider it a lesson learned. At least you got the job done.

Metal discs come apart to but the scars are kool. Been there done that. Just part of the proof you did it yourself.

I quote someone on HAMB "That's Going to leave a mark". That was the first thing the wife said too. I on the other hand have this pain thing going on right now that it hurts clear into the side of my head. I need to heal quick so I can get the body off before the tractor gets here to put the new pipes in the holes for our new gantry. I know the gantry is suppose to be used to take the body off. Well the old 6 by 6s are too rotten to even take a chance lifting anything. I have some good drugs (percodan) to help me make it easier to stand. Gumpa
