Story w/pictures about 2 junk yards I patronized over the past 58 years. One of them "Easy Jack" & Sons in Junction City, Kansas. Another being Hilltop Auto Salvage in Anchorage, Alaska. They were my source back then for Hot Rod parts. https://michael-hankins.com/2019/06/03/treasure-hunt/ "My, how times have changed!"
Great story, I've driven by Easy Jacks several times on my way heading east & west but never stopped in. In 1985 we drove to Alaska with my cousin. He had a 71 I H Travelall. with the usual rust. His gas tank developed a good leak. Checked out a yard outside of Anchorage that had some real treasures, a 50 Ford woodie, or just what was left of it. Got to dig around the truck section with several Binders. Found a tank in the least likely one, it had a mess of bondo worms hanging on the inside of the quarter panel and a pretty new tank. He made it back home.
When I was 15 Easy Jack was a pretty nice guy. Years later he would yell out to the yard, "you better not be opening hoods out there!"
I remember the smell of the office of the wrecking yard my dad first took me to. I try to stop by the wrecking yard when I come thru my hometown just for the smell. It reminds me of dad.
Good read there....yep - as my dad bought and sold an occasional old (steal) of a car my brother/sisters and I tried to be the one to " clean it out "....it was a lot better than hunting in the couch pockets !
That was a good read Hacksaw,. Reminds me of some of the yards I roamed when I was young and a few around the Waco Tx area where I and James Hurst and a couple others spent a lot of time in the early 70's .
