Well documented and thought out vintage inspired throwback to simpler times @Wardog...so I'm assuming it will be fenderless but you may have other plans...(and yes I know fenders are manditory)...I mean bobbed rears and cycle/spare ring or no fronts look good too. No chop either? The body looks pretty solid...that will make the transition smoother...oh yeah nice shiny bits on the engine no hood perhaps... Anyways a pleasure to witness your journey in Hotrod...thanks for sharing it with us Hoodlums...
@Stogy thanks for the compliment. You made me realise I haven’t spelled out the vision in my head. The plan is an early hot rod, a 40’s style build. Like a kid bought a driving chassis from a wrecking yard and put dads old coupe body on top. Hi boy, no hood. As for a chop. For sure, I’m set on 4” but not until I have the body properly mounted to the frame. It will be a bit of a treat after the car has hit the road in its new form.
I washed the engine a few more times today. Then we removed the coil bracket, some washers and the end of an old braided earth strap from under the head nuts.
Really nice build you have going there Wardog! It's awesome that your son is right there with you. It gives me hope that there will be a next generation of vintage hotrodders.
He looks like a well mannered young man. Wise beyond his years i suspect. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thanks for the kind words guys. @chryslerfan55 He is a good kid. He likes to help and is very mechanically able.
Tonight I made a start on my brake pedal. I didn’t expect to procrastinate on this as much as I have. But when you have such a nice set of pedals that first cut is a hard one to make. I cut the mechanical brake lever off the pedal and straightened it in the press. Then after some trimming and scalloping with a file I tacked it back on the bottom of the pedal. I’ll turn my attention to the master cylinder mount before welding it completely.
I’ve been getting a bit done every night this week. Tonight I assembled and checked it then welded the repositioned lever to the pedal. I’m happy with the position of the master cylinder, it’s a lot higher than the suspension and where the sump will be. The mismatched bolts will be replaced by some new unc hardware.
The last couple of weekends I’ve been busy with the family and haven’t achieved much. What I have done has been during the week. Today I put bushes in the pedals but that wasn’t really worth a photo. So here is a photo from before I pulled the engine I had forgotten about.
I made some rear legs for the center crossmember this weekend. I used some laser cut channels a friend gave me. I started by flattening out sections of the lip on the back edge of the crossmember for the legs to fit flush. Nothing groundbreaking about them. They meet the rails at about the same place as some stock holes. I picked up on the transmission mount for the front brackets. Sometimes you need bigger filler than you have...
Looking great Wardy! That thing has such a good stance.. One of these days we’ll be cruising together Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I bought some headers knowing they wouldn’t clear the steering box. So I’ve been modifying them for clearance. I got that done tonight, now on to the rest of the exhaust.
Just catching up on the build, really great progress. The chassis legs make a world of difference for stiffness. Can’t wait to see this done. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
