We extended/widened the front frame and got the axle in place. We still need to cut the MII crossmember out and finish welding but this will give an idea of what we are going for here.

Remember how the Fiat Topolino dragsters set the front axle out in front of the sheetmetal? A VW bug would look very good like that

Second page already? This project rocks!

Obviously, the Bug was a unibody car originally. How are you keeping the body rigid after you cut the floorpans out of it? Are you welding the body direct to the rails when you're done or building body mounts, etc?

Nice work, but really I don't get it, it's a bug for christsakes, I can see doing a bug as, well a bug, but your trying to make it something it's not, nor will it ever be, maybe they'd dig it over at volksrods.com or one of those, but damn if you put that much work into a Model A or something I could see it, but damn man let the bug be a bug...

What's to get? He's building an Altered style drag car, and adapting it for street use. It's a traditional style car, not one of the cal-style wannabe street rods. Forget the "G***er" reference - it's an Altered. Maybe it would be better to wait until it's done before p***ing judgement.

Why? Model Ts and Model As were economy cars. Why put all that money into making them what they were never designed to be?

It WILL be cool, it WILL be quick, it WILL be traditional...

At least they were traditional Hot Rods, VW's NOT! A's and T's were made into hot rods because that's what there was. By the time VW's made it over here they were just economy cars period. There were lots of other cars that were/are much better suited to being front engined/rear drive traditional Hot Rods.

I'm kind of glad I missed them the first time....

I get replacing a 4 banger with a V-8, I get building a strong frame to replace a weak one, I don't mind the Cali look Bugs (just not here), but damn it's still gonna be an ugly *** bug, period. g***er, altered, whatever, it's still ugly and out of it's element, I'v ebeen watching all the VW **** creeping in and I liked it a lot better when it was flamed off...

Hey thanks guys. We're getting really excited about this one.

The frame is from a company that sells V8 Bug frames. They also make a fibergl*** body but I don't care for it.They mold it without the rain rails and body lines and it's "chopped". It just looks funny to me. I picked it up from a guy that wanted to do something else.

The Heater channels sit right on the frame so it wount be a problem mounting it. It will be bolted on just like the original pan but much more rigid.

    Zman get over yourself.

I'd rather see a well done Altered Bug than another belly draggin', rattle can primed, Model A fordor-turned-roadster mock up that will never see the street.

I don't want this place taken over by Bug Altereds either but I can make room for one well done example - with **** loads of traditional hot rod appeal & ingenuity.

This car kicks ***. I hope there are yards of lace & pounds of b*** boat flake in its future.

    Please keep us updated 52GMC.

I'm not going to argue. There are plenty of examples of this being done "back in the day" but even if there wern't I'd do it anyway. If I am bothering people with progress pics I simply won't post about it anymore.

This is not a "I'm taking my ball and going home" type deal. I'm just saying if it's not wanted here then I won't bring it here.

See this is why you're a bunch of whiney queens

I didn't say take it away, I complimented on the work, I stated I didn't get it, I guess you guys dont comprehend very well... :D

Your'e building an entirely new car, there is nothing but he body left, the essence of the car is gone... and I don't hate VW's, I've had my share. But you guys think I'm ******* on your VW parade, what a ****ing bunch of pansies...

See read... I understand upgrading a car... modifying it, making it better, not putting a body on something else that only shares RWD with the original... get it? what a bunch of sensitive VW guys you seem to be....

Ok just so you guys have more to bash on me about, explain to me so I get it...

You have a rear engine, unibody, RWD car. You want to modify it. You make it front engine, you build a full frame for it, you only save the body, and really take the essence and engineering the car is known for away from it. Now I know plenty of quick VW's, but it seems this is more form over function. You have a design that already has the weight bias over the rear wheels making for great traction. You disturb this to move the engine to the front and then jack the front to put the weight back over the rear wheels (their justification for a g***er) to increase traction. It doesn't make sense, I don't get the whole thing... see... no I hate VW's  :D ;) :p ...
