I’m not sure what cl*** this car ran. We have talked about it before. Hopefully Jim can tell us more.

Jason that is **** Taylor at the 64 Winternationals where he won cl*** running the #202. He ran a pretty impressive11.63 at 121.78. He also won the 63 Winternationals and did pretty well at the 62 Winternats (but Mazmanian was in the same cl*** in 62 and took cl*** honors). At the U.S Nats it was a different story as Sam Cunningham took home the CM/SP honors. Remember that Wildabeast also ran in this cl*** and all were probably a bunch of fun to watch.

Thanks Jim and Pat. I like learning about the history of the ones that actually drag raced back in the day. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall back in those days.

Jim Costilow non-Dragonsnake Cobra was piloted by Bruce Larson of USA-1 fame at the 1964 Winternationals. This was a used ‘63 that was taken to Larson to prep for drag racing by Costilow.

LB, I believe this is the 4th round of the 1965 Street Eliminator runoff at the Winternationals (they both ran identical mph of 114.21 but Dutre ran a 11.81 to Larson's 11.99-sounds like it would have been a close race to say the least). Dutre not only put Larson on the trailer but he also won street eliminator with a win over Bill Hoefer in a small block Galaxie, I believe. Do you know where this picture came from?

Yes, in the custom thread, and it shouldn't have been posted there either.

This factoid is completely inconsequential to the topic at hand but I seemed to recall that Bill Hoefer's C/FX Galaxie was, in fact, powered by a Weber-carbureted 289 as developed by Ford for the Cobra. A little research turned up this link: <https://www.hotrod.com/articles/battle-of-the-heavyweights-cfx-racing/>. I knew Bill, raced against him at San Gabriel and later against his sons all over Division 7. Every one of them were/are tough compe***ors!

Chuck you could be right on that. I thought there was a big block Ford in FX, maybe it was Jerry Harvey-I guess without a little research I could be off on that as well.

1965 was the year of the OHC 427 Mustangs but Ford put several other combinations in the book to cover all their bases in S/S, A/FX, B/FX, and C/FX. Darrell Droke ran a 427 (a "cammer," I think) in B/FX on the west coast, Clester Andrews ran a 427 wedge Mustang in A/FX from Orange, Texas, Jerry Harvey did campaign "The Quiet One" 427 Galaxie sponsored by Bob Ford in B/FX. The entire genre was in a fairly constant state of flux through the season as the sport evolved in a helter-skelter fashion toward funny cars in all forms.

Because I had known Bill Hoefer locally and watched him nail the 1964 World Championship with a '56 Chevy in D/MP, we all watched his small block Galaxie, sponsored by a local dealer (Burch Ford of La Habra), with special interest. I suppose that any or all of them might have swapped combinations through the year as the season progressed but I think Hoefer was in C/FX with 289 power to begin the season.

    A bit from the article:

A lightweight Galaxie with the same engine options went to Jerry Harvey of Indiana. The new Ford C/FX combination would use the Galaxie/289 Cobra combo. The base was the 1965 Galaxie 500 hardtop that had a vented fibergl*** hood with a Thunderbolt-like teardrop bulge (3,550 pounds base weight minus 23 for the hood); to that was added a heavy-duty rearend (85) with reinforced suspension (11), trunk-mounted battery (35), four-speed (6), 15-inch wheels with spare (the spare weighed 19), and the eight-barrel Cobra engine. A ****ter shield added another 45 pounds and the rollbar (yes, one) pushed 43 more pounds into the car, for a true weight of 3,781 pounds. Ford included a statement that teams would remove fuel to get closer to the minimum weight.

From Brooksfield Dragway's (South Australia) parking lot in the mid 60's. Corvettes were a very rare car in Australia at the time and modified ones even more so.

That Corvette is, I believe, the 1967 Bob Wingate FSO car. This link will take you to an article in SuperChevy magazine that contains a lot of info on the car and Bob Wingate: <http://www.superchevy.com/features/vemp-0604-bob-wingate-fso-corvettes>. Believe it or not, I recognized the car, not because of its macho appearance but, because of the background of the photo. I drive past that corner of the Covina City Park just about every day. The location is on Badillo Avenue, a few feet west of 4th Avenue, and only a couple of blocks from the original site of Clippinger Chevrolet. Bob Wingate, as described in SuperChevy, was a big hitter in the promotion of Corvettes around this part of the L.A. Basin.
