i converted the 700r4 in my truck from an electric speedo to mechanical. it took all of fifteen minutes and was very straightforward. the bad side is that the parts cost $70 new from www.bowtieoverdrives.com. the good news is that you're getting new gears that are matched to your rear and tires, so the speedo will read right. fwiw, my trans was from a '91 roadmaster.

    hope this helps,

The GM parts catalog lists actual gears for 700R4s in the B body (Caprice) through 1990.

  5. any good ****** shop will have the parts you need to convert....i have done it before with used parts i got from one...save yourself a few bucks

use this link from TCI to figure out what gears you need:

I had an electrical speedo and converted with parts from bowtie also, gave them the tire diameter and rearend ratio and they set me up with the correct gears. hardest part was removing the reluctor ring from the tailshaft, I had to cut it and split it.

if you are going with a good used transmission i highly recommend the transgo small shift kit, easier to replace a few springs with it on the bench. referred to me by a fellow hamber, it makes all the difference, mine was slippin and sluggish, now goes like a ****d ape. i think the earler models are the ones to avoid, they dont have the updates or something like that. mine is a 89 caprice trans. i believe 88 on up was a good bet. i had a good 700 r4 website but cant find it, try a hamb search.

88-up has all the updates mainly hardend ring gear in the planitary and 13 vein pump ect. Corvette gov is a must a 4 cly s-10 gov is same, weights are like .59 i think ,also full size and trucks should have mech. Speedo through 90 ish.Highly recomend a kick down vavle alows for full trottle up shifts and hold overdrive at part throttle highway cruisein'
