This motor has been sitting since 65 in a garage so it's covered with 40 years of dust, no exhaust manifolds but otherwise complete from air cleaner to oil pan. I'm not sure if it turns or not but it has never been exposed to ant direct water. I heard mustang guys buy these right up.
I'm almost 100% that it is, it still has the sticker on the air cleaner, it has the dual point distributor and the larger front dampner, I may be able to pick it up tonight and will check for solid lifters and get the numbers off of it, what else should I be looking for? any certain engine numbers?
They are unique.....Came in other cars other than the mustang also.... If it's an early one, it'll have the vin stamped right above the oil pan lip on the p***/ front of the block.....Should have a "k" in it if it's there....I think Ford did this through '65....I had one of these years ago with about 125k on it and decided to replace with a later 302, thinking the hi-po was getting tired......Well, the 302 never ran as good as the hi-po......Oh, and i had thrown the hi-po away Resto guys would kill for this if the date codes match their car
You should be able to tell by the heads too, but I don't remember how. If you can't find it on the internet, I'll ask my dad. He was a Ford mechanic in the 60's. He drove ALL of the factory hot rod's we all love. Pikesan
A friend of mine just built one to vintage race. He said that one of the things that sets the hi-po heads apart is the valve spring pockets--they're beefier, and will take a bigger spring. -Brad
If it's the real deal, I'd be interested in it...could always use another K code motor. I bought a complete one last year for $1500 less carb and exhaust...it's now being rebuilt to vintage race specs...about 475HP. Cheers...
I knew of 3 true Hipo 289s my friend had them in the late 60s early 70s all 3 had screw in freeze plugs.I don't know what years they were or if all the Hipos had screw in plugs but those 3 did and all were factory engines not remans my friend pulled them from wrecks at the junk yard he worked at
pull a valve cover look for screw in rocker studs & cast in spring cups , i would say $ 2-4 thousand depending on condition
Pull the pan, dont they have bigger main cap bolts or something. Should be a "k" on the block, screw in studs???
i didnt look at the date either. Damn its 2 yrs. Old i'm a big dummy too. But is it sold!!!!!!!!he he he.
2 years ago i bought a hipo 289 with 4 spd trans ,bell and stock air cleaner out of a tech school with a tag that it was donated to the school from the mahwah ford plant for $1900, motor was set up on a test stand will full gauges hooked up. speedo hat 158 miles on it.
