I have been told that I should install some kind of a safety system that hooks into the oil pressure line so the engine will not start until there is oil pressure present.
    Has anyone heard of this?
Is it possible, or am I getting my leg pulled?

There are oil pressure switches that only connect under pressure but are usually used as safety switches for electric fuel pumps. I think it would make you crank a long time if the car has sat for a while and oil has drained from the p***ages.

I think Vegas came with one. I looked into using one on a 2.3 Turbo that I eliminated the distributor and ran LS coils. If the cam gear stripped the oil pump gear I wanted the engine to cut off.

Have one on my 53 F100 so that it kills the electric fuel pump if the engine loses oil pressure.

I dont think it is necessary. How long would you have to crank on it to build oil pressure? Maybe a emergency shut off but that's not necessarily needed either.

I'm sure that such a switch may be needed in some type of application, but in a auto engine it is is not necessary.

Just think of this - there have been billions of cars manufactured over the years. With a possible really small exception, none of the cars had such a switch.

I ran one on our race engines for years in conjunction with a light and gauge.I would think overkill on street but at highway speed lose oil pressure then ask if it was worth the time and effort.as to no factory install think MONEY the penny pinchers at head office.one of our member I think would have wished he had one as he lost a lot of money and time and the saga continues

The purpose is to prevent the chance of a fire in a wreck when the fuel pump continues to supply fuel to a none running engine.

    ME?
    Hahaha.
Actually I do have one, which is why I never heard any noises......the computer shut down the fuel pump when the engine started seizing, and the engine just shut off. I think all cars since the 90's are probably set up that way.
Actually, not sure if it was an oil pressure sensor that made the computer shut the fuel off.......I'm more inclined to think it was the cam position sensor when the cam siezed up, but either way, I think the newer cars probably have multiple safety systems.

I was talking old school no multiple sensor type engines.simple oil pressure kill ignition type.not electric fuel shutoff.not my money though sorry Rich if your system did not help

Oil pressure switch(that kills ignition) with a push ****on byp*** switch inside that you hold in when starting, until oil pressure comes up. Wouldn't be difficult or silly.

That will work, but defeats the original poster's intent to prevent firing until oil pressure builds.

Yeah, I was more thinking along the lines of shutting it down if there was a loss of oil pressure(as a resent thread highlights).
