Hey folks, i was wondering what is the best paint to use to paint clear plastic. I want to paint some clear plastic tail light lens and was wondering what is the best paint to use to get a TRANSPARENT color on them. I was thinking a candy color is the way to go. Any suggestions. Thanks brad
my brother, on a way unacceptable hamb car (2001 chevy) painted his plastic lenses with a red over the yellow, and then a clear on top of that-- the red has held up ok, but the clear starts to fade and peel off every 6 or 7 months- -you might look at the krylon plastic paint line. hope this helps. keith
thanks for the suggestion. I'm doing them on 59 caddy tail lights. I was shooting for a blue tint. i tried dye.( i heard that may work) no luck. so i will keep trying.
Brad, have you tried ink? I remember many moons ago, people in the UK were using ink to tint lenses dark....before the advent of the 'lens tinting' kits.... Ask Willie, I'm sure he can tell you!!
If youre trying to achieve a smoked look. I have seen folks on the bay sell these after market 59 repop taillights in dark smoke, Amber, clear, and standard red with blue dots lenses.
You can paint them any color you want, but as stated it has a tendency to peel after a while. Get some "Bulldog" adhesion promoter. It's clear and it will keep the paint on there.
I can't remember to be honest Brad it was a long while back!! I seem to remember it was thinned down a LOT tho & shot with an airbrush....
I wouldn't use the Krylon plastic paint its a joke. Any lacquer based paint should bite enough but as in any paint you need mechanical bite in the form of sanding but use a grit like 400 that won't show through, test first
