I have a 1953 chevy 210 4dr sedan with the 235 in it when i first bought it it ran good for three days then everything started to go wrong the car has the oringinal 6 volt system but it has a new 12-volt coil I put in because the one in it had a bad secondary. I put new platnium spark plugs in(can a 6 volt system even handle platnium tip spark plugs, The damn thing wont start. when I had the regular plugs in after i put the new 12-volt coil in and thouched the carb it would run for 20 sec and die out sometimes backfire through the carb. Need all the help I can get any ideas?
Try to put the old components back on and see what happens. Then you'll know if one or two of the things you changed need to be changed again...Post up progress.
That's why I told him to put the old **** back on...hoping that he'll catch the uh-oh before I said anything.
wouldn't a 12 volt coil without a resistor just be a 6 volt coil? put delco plugs in, platinum ones won't like the less than perfect mix of a rochester. it sounds like the timing is incorrect, advanced or wires on wrong, shouldn't backfire unless an intake valve is hung open. 1. check your firing order 2. plug the vacuum advance off, you could have a weak spring 3. old cars need old parts, platinum belongs on rapper's teeth.
you need to give more information on your car! do you have a 12 volt batt if so do you have a ballist resistor? well all i could say is check the ignition points!
the battery in 6-volt when i bought the car it already had a 12 volt coil on it the parts guys told me the secondary was bad so I had to buy a new one. tif you are looking directly at th car from the front at the engine on the right hand side the other componet is tweleve volt it is connected to the belt. I am confused why would there be a six volt battery. please help me through this this is my first cl***ic car and I hav alot to learn. does anyone know the factory setting on the rochcester one barrel carb that came standard on the 235 in 1953? Thanks for all the help
huh? the "other componet is tweleve volt it is connected to the belt." you mean the alternator? are you sure its 6 volt? your other post wasn't spelled so horribly and made sense, you been drinkin' boy!? If you don't know about the carb, leave it alone. Get an old mechanic's book from a yard sale or thrift store and read before you start adjusting ****. crawl, then run. I have been working on cars for 13 years and still have alot to learn.
so should i put a 12 volt battery in and see what happens. if it is the alternator it is about 10 inches in length and mounted towards the bottom of the engine. I just don't understand why must of the componets are twelve volt but the battery is 6volt
it sounds like a 6 volt generator that size, 12 volt alternators are usually not mor than 8" diameter and 6" in length, and have multiple wires on the back. better take a few pics so we can see what the hell you are working with.
If you are unsure, do NOT put a 12 volt battery in. How do you know the other components are 12 volt?
they are ingraved 12v on them the altenator wires are not coming from the back but on the side of the body
one more question oes the the negitive coil wire go to the distrub. or does the postive go to the distrub.
The negative coil lead goes to the screw on the side of the distributor that goes through the housing to the points.
