Has anyone come up with the correct steering wheel adapter to fit a grant aftermarket steering wheel to the factory column in my 1953 Victoria? Grant claims it is their model #4267. They are wrong because it doesn't have the matching taper for the end of the shaft and the splines don't seem to match up either. Thanks for any help.......Bob
That is the part number I used on my '54 worked fine. https://www.jegs.com/i/Grant/470/4267/10002/-1 Click on Vehicle fitment link.
That may be but there was a member here that had to machine the adapter to fit over the tapered end of the shaft for the adapter to fit down far enough to even engage the splines so I wonder why column is different?....Bob
hard to believe after all these years that they would have the wrong listing.I have one from many moons ago and i think it is the one listed.there is a good possibility the one you got was mixed up at shipping.believe it or not it happens
Even Jeg's listing says "most models" and a small correction.... it wasn't a member here that had to machine their adapter, it was in the reviews on Speedway's website for the 4267 adapter that a customer had to machine a few thousands off the inside bore to make the adapter fit. looks like I have to also....Bob
Do you have any up and down movement in the steering shaft ? Ford used this same bushing kit up into the 90's they can get worn and break and will fall inside of the column you might want to replace them while you have the wheel off. https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-1965-1...ing-Bushing-kit-Bearing-4pc-set-/122206270670
No ,there is no play up and down or laterally in the column. This car was completely restored a few years back so everything was restored or like new. Like I described earlier, the shaft has a definite taper to it reducing down to where the treads for the shaft nut start whereas the adapter bore is straight with no taper to it. Also, there was no mix up in shipping.. I ordered and got the "correct" 4267 adapter....Bob
Maybe this diagram will help? 1952-53 Ford Steering Diagram by danman55 posted Jul 15, 2019 at 8:19 AM From what I was able to ascertain, the 54 Ford setup is a different animal because Ford gives the whole diagram its own page, and so it looks like the 52/53 would need it's own adapter from Grant. For the link that Jeff gave on some of the hardware parts, you can see where those pieces go, but if you are not having trouble with lateral movement, you are probably ok.
the sad fact today is the old familiar names we knew and made in NA are now made in a far away place.if you were closer I would search my old one out and let you try it.
So I guess Grant had no suggestions by contacting them ? http://www.grantproducts.com/tech-support#ford
They said try to count the splines, take a picture , and measure shaft diameter and they might be able to find something that " might work" ? They also repeated that the adapter fit "most models" but to my way of thinking if you know it wouldn't fit all models wouldn't you know what models it didn't fit and maybe list an alternate adapter? Anyone know what the spline count is?........Bob
you have it why do you not count for yourself that way you are not relying on someone else.as they may miscount adding to your problem.may want to get a hold of the guy on the mother board that you said he had same problem?
Random thing, but in recent years I've been burnt more than once with a correct part number on the box and the wrong part in the box. Just food for thought. I have a grant adapter kit on my '55. It didn't fit worth a ****. I spent hours filing each and every spline in that adapter and it still doesn't seat down quite as far as I feel like it should. If you ask me, their quality control is nonexistent.
I heard that some '55-'56 's have a flat keyway on the steering shaft that you have to line up when installing the steering wheel, take a look at the old wheel and see it it's there. If that's the case you probably have to file a groove in the adapter.
This just might explain things about Grant quality control it seems Grant no longer has a American manufacturing facility http://www.grantproducts.com/about-us
my point on you counting was that if your count varies from what they state then there is a possibility tthat you have wrong adapter.but seeing as how you do not want to help yourself you can piss and moan about your problem and not solve.OH do take this personally.sorry Jeff
After reading some of the comments about the quality of Grant adapters that members posted, I see I'm not alone about this issue. At 63 my eyes aren't up to the task of staring at a 3/4" shaft counting tiny splines hoping I don't miss one. That plus the taper mismatch adds up to a project that isn't that important to me. Not sorry........Bob
It's been a couple of years, but I remember both the shaft and the adapter having a flat to register the wheel the right way. The issue I ran into was that the splines were simply too tight. When I first tried to install the adapter, it would barely even start on to the shaft.
I had the same problem with a recently purchased 4267 Grant adapter for my 54. I think they may have made an error during the casting pattern transfer to China. So I ordered a GT Performance part# 10-6067 adapter and it fit perfectly. I attached the Grant wheel and horn ****on to the GT adapter using the hardware from the Grant 4267 kit but have not been able to make the born work since the wire comes up through the steering shaft.
Didn't have any problem with my '54 the old horns were gone so I used a Harbor Freight horn kit,but with the key turned on check for voltage with a test light from the wire coming out of the column under the hood pushing the horn ****on down completes the ground and gives you the current flow. If you converted to 12 volts did you keep the original horn relay ?
Yes I completely rewired for 12 volt with a Rebel wiring kit. I have power to the born when I ground the wire i just need to mount a push ****on on the dash. Looks are not that important since its primarily a race car.
