Good day ... Bought a Torque Converter lock up kit for a rebuilt 200 4R complete with a mechanical dash switch to lock up my torque converter in 4th. I want to use the existing brake pedal switch to kill the Torque Converter lock up when I hit my brakes. My question... Is there a dash switch that when power is cut (using brake pedal) that will reset the dash switch to off ? Thank you.
You could use a momentary switch on the dash to power a relay and use the stop switch to kill power to it. Wire it up so that switching on the relay with the momentary switch would latch the relay and energize the TC and stepping on the brakes kills control power to the relay and de-energizes the TC.
I do not understand electronics at all. So I had to do a Google search about what Doublepumper was talking about. I found this: https://www.rs-online.com/designspark/electical-latching-circuit
Double-P, I don't quite get that the momentary switch could activate the relay and it would stay activated even after the momentary switch would go back to off. I'm fogged up, sorry. Thanx so far Double P
Very easy to do with a relay. You use a push button to activate the relay. (When released it is off) On the output side of the relay you run a wire around to the button side of the relay (This latches it to stay on after the button is released) Now this latching wire MUST be wired in series with the brake switch to break the circuit and switch it off. Use a GM brake switch with the cruise control feature.
On my 60 Pontiac I'm using a second floor mounted dimmer switch to lock up the 2004R torque convertor and a small light bulb on the bottom of the left dash in the vicinity of the parking brake release handle to remind me when the torque convertor is locked up. A safety item as I don't have to divert my eye balls from the road looking for a lock up switch
Also if you want to be "creative" , you can add a GM vacuum switch between the output of the relay and the Torque Converter lockup. This way it will unlock on acceleration/kick down , but the relay still stays latched so it will re-engage lock-up when you lift off the gas. cheers Mimi
I have exactly the same thing. If I understand the original question, why would you want to turn off the lockup after tapping the brakes in OD? If I'm getting off the highway I just hit the switch and unlock, rather than having to constantly turn it back on.
im running a gm vacuum switch and a toggle switch, i can leave the toggle on and when it shifts into 4th it locks up, let off the gas and it unlocks as it should. i can run with the switch off and no lock up but have all 4 gears. fun to play with.
I generally set them up to run fully automated. Vacuum switch and brake light switch. At minimum, automatic lockup, in 4th, only. If a customer requests it, I put in a switch to disable the lockup, when desired. You will be hating life if you have a fully manual system, the first time you forget to unlock it, at an intersection. Your insurance company might have some questions that you don't want to answer. Answer those questions wrong, and you might see your policy voided.
Thanx, appreciate Because I can't be trusted to "just hit the switch and unlock". I'd prefer use the lock up similar to a cruise control. Thank you, appreciate.
Good heads up, that's why I want the sucker off when I hit the brake pedal similar to cruise control. Appreciate the advise thanx.
