Thanks for all the compliments! The color is 1950 VW Texas Brown and seems to be a hit with everyone. I wasn't too sure if it would work but can't imagine it any other color now.
I'm in VW rehab. Every few years I relapse though.......it usually happens after I see something like this. In a loud color without all the little chrome bits & hiccups it would loose 1/2 its appeal. As it is though you've created a real head-scratcher. The color is perfect. I swear VW used the BEST earth tones ever applied to a car. Did you make the safari windshield frame yourself? Last I heard, no one was producing those - & certainly not for a chopped '56 'vert. I love it. Would love to do something similar someday. JH
You know folks have been modifying and customizing Vdubs for nearly 50 years now. I think that makes an altered VW traditional. Kudos! That kicks ass!
Forgot to mention, If you go to my site http://www.airspeedparts.com/ and click on the goofy pic of me on the Hot Rod magazine it will take you to a 6 min slide show of the build up....with some music. Enjoy!
Nice VW! Who took the photos? The reason I ask is because they remind of the style you would see in say, 1951 Hot Rod or 1952 Hop-Up mag. What camera too? Thanks for sharing. Ken
Gkafer, think yer mighta pushed that envelope there a touch. Kool colour combo an' nice stylin' on dem 'Bobbed' fenders. T'umbs up, Koops.....
Snipe, I built a 1914cc, 69 counterweighted crank, uni tech rods, Mahle 94 mm P&C, Full flowed oil, Erson NOS 2pc lifters,40mm Dellortos, Weiand Finned pully cover, big valve heads. I tried to keep it vintage looking but with a little more power. All the tin is black powder with alum accents. I'll ad a better pic later but this was it a month ago.
i dont think anybody can talk any shit about your ride with the quality you put into it, you did a hell of a job.
Geoff, car looks great. Is it hard building a car when you live in an igloo? How about a picture of it next to your brother's pickup? rick s. vancouver
WOW!! Where did you find the decklid??$$$$$$ Damn fine build...........just ignore seymour. hahahaha!
Dang gumit I hate brown, but that looks really cool. I'm not a fan of VW bugs, but like many others have said, that is a nice job on that one!!
O.K... I have been lurking here for a while, but this thread made me have to register so I could post!!! Gkafer... Simply Amazing!!! I have just started my VW Hot Rod project and your photos have given me some inspiriation... I would love to copy your safari style windshield if you would be so kind as to give a few pointers on how you fabricated that one!!! Thanks, Dave Brisco
SinisterCustom, I made the lid. You can see the build up of it on my webpage (posted above) A real one would set me back $6000+ if you could find it. Dave Brisco The windsheild build up is shown on my site as well. It was my first attempt at doing anything like that so I'm sure someone here could give you better info. Have a look anyway. http://www.airspeedparts.com/community-forum/index.php?act=SF&f=25
Yeah I figured you did. Hembuller parts are scarce. Say, I see your in Vancouver....Wa or B.C.? Hopefully I'll be able to see this car in person at a show sometime here in Wa???
Very, very cool. I particularly like the rear lid, the top, and the tailpan treatment -- it all works exceptionally well. I hope it's as much fun to drive as it is to look at!
Geoff, Your ride is killer, that color is perfect, and there is not one thing I would change on it. All that hard work has definitely paid off, you absoulutely nailed it. Mike
