Many years ago I borrowed a set of those clips from a friend to set the valves on my first build, about a minute in the tabs broke off a couple of them. Damn, I hate buying things I cant keep! Cut the center out of an old valve cover and never used anything else after that.
Fogger, that sounds like a pretty impressive combination. What trans are you running that has a 3.26 first gear???? I see that you are in the SFV area. My 57 210 spent the first 45 yrs of its existence in the Valley! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
It's an old Richmond 5-speed with a 1 to 1 fifth gear. It's a great gearbox and the 283 is a good runner. My '55 Delray was built in Oakland in Oct '54, I'm the 2nd owner.
Have run alot of the 12 and 18 cams and 30-30's. Love the sound. The 12 and 18 is more streetable. I only had to go over the solids maybe twice a year-would find a few "flyers" Both will wind well above 6500 no problem.
If noise is your friend, then by all means use a solid lifter cam of either choice. I would recommend the 350 hp 327 cam. It's hydraulic, performs well and has a nice rump rump sound at the tailpipe plus once the lifters are adjusted properly, you are done.
Found an NOS "151" cam in the GM tube many years ago, it's in my Novas' never fired 327/350 hp engine. I'd advise getting the aftermarket grind as they are going for gold plated $$$ now.
Gold eh? I have one laying on the bench, replaced it with a roller. Still probably won't get rid of it, It was in my Camaro in high school.
I was talking about a new one. That old one might be best kept as a conversation piece during bench racing sessions.
Should have asked the question diffrent. But 7000 will work fine with the 097. 30-30 would be a better choice imo. Get 1.6 rockers. And have fun.
I have this in my 327 , L79 pistons and 2.02 camel humps . Sounds awesome and runs good. I also used Isky “super lifters” http://schneidercams.com/LSP-2Hsbchyd.aspx
Got a cam in my 327 that say's A266 112. flat top pistons and 1,72 and 1,3 valves 62 cc Haven't run or stared it upp. What do you think. stupid or useful?
The car has had its fare share of hydraulic cams in the past but it has also had a 283hp, 315hp and an LT1 at various different times. My plan is to go back to 1961-1963 when it ran a 315hp just with a little bigger bore an stroke. The 097 would be the obvious choice but I thought I might cheat a bit with the 30-30. had a stock '54 Ford 1/2 ton PU, even had wood side boards - looked like farm truck - had a Vette motor with 30-30 mechanical solid lifter cam & worn out glass pack mufflers - would pull up to stop sign and people would look around for a Corvette - lots of fun
If find it odd that so many mention about having to adjust solid lifters. I have a M farmall with solids its a 1944 LP engine. and I did adjust the valves one time. and I think im the only one who had the valve cover off. I also have a 53 ford 262 engine . solid lifters and ive never adjusted the valves. I have a solid lifter 235 in my 56 more door no problems. I run 30-30 cams and never have experienced a excessive need for lifter adjustment?
Also remember that Ford used solid lifters on all their engines through the FEs....never needed to adjust those.......food for thought....
I like modern cams as much as the next guy but from everyone I’ve talk to and everything I’ve read the injectors seem not like the modern cams so I figured it would be best to stick with the stock cam grind. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
You don't say if it's a 3 pedal car... Might help in the choice. As for adjusting valve lash if you have a few extra $$$ step up to a T&D sportsman shaft rocker arm system. Holds precise lash thru a season of hard 1/2 mile dirt racing and fits under stock covers..
It did get mentioned somewhere along the way but your are correct in that I forgot to mention it up in the opening statement. The 097 was I believe a stick only option or at least in 57 it was. As for the later cam in the corvette I would imagine stick only for the time but I’d have to look that up. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Always had the best luck with the 097 cam with Rochester fuel injection. They need about 14" of vacuum to run properly from the ones I have had. My 57 Fuely ran great with this cam for many years.
