I am heading to Seattle and was wondering if there are any "well stocked" Rod shops in Seattle and area to do some shopping?
Dreamers in Everett is the only one I can think of. A smallish street rod parts store. Arlington drag strip reunion Saturday Sept 7 if you're in the area.
With the closure of Jim Green's Performance Center, in Monroe, Wa, and his recent death, Dreamer's, is about all that's left. Used to be Green's Lynnwood store, and Al Van ****'s Speed Shop on Rucker, then later on Hoyt (?) in Everett, Wa. Nothing left anymore. It started with Service Center Speed Shops arriving in the Seattle area in the early 80's; how do you even compete with a large, nationwide chain? Now, throw in the internet. We all killed them off, just to save a few dollars. Thing is, all we had to do was look at our girl friends and wives to see what they were doing, and what was happening. Same thing, different product, and most everything is gone now. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Marty, If I remember correctly it was about late spring or the beginning of summer when he p***ed away. He had had some health issues and was involved in a pretty bad Auto accident over the last couple years. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
From what I can find Jim Green p***ed away on June 11 this year. I met him once that I remember. He had his cammer powered street rod at an event that I went to and we got to talking as I was taking photos of the car with my Pentax ME super. I remember that he took the time to explain things about the car to me. Probably because at the moment I had little idea of who he was and was more interested in taking photos of the car. The closest thing we had to a "real" speed shop over here in the Yakima Valley was the Speed Section of Bowdens Auto parts that catered to both drag and circle track along with rodders with street cars. I worked for them in the early 90's and they sold the majority of the speed equipment in the area. Speed World had a store in Yakima for a number of years but they didn't put much of dent in Bowden's business. Bowdens closed down when the owner's wife said enough was enough and They at they were retiring. They had already retired once but had to go back to work when their son couldn't handle the business due to alleged drug use. No one else to take it over and no one who could afford to buy the business around at the time.
I lived a few blocks from Jim's Greens store/shop, always something interesting going in the shop area. Jim had a son who had special needs, by all accounts Jim was a great father and care giver to his son.....................
Sorry to hear of his p***ing, I knew Jim over 30 years, and followed him since his Green Elephant Funny Car days. He had quite a love for Cammer Fords, his most famous hotrod was the 34 Phaeton, my favorite of his cars was the 29 Tudor. R.I.P. Old Friend.
He was a character for sure and had really mellowed over the last several years. As far as Cammer Fords go, one night when we were sitting and eating dinner I asked him exactly how many he still had and I think he said 23 including the ones running in cars. Lots of history and knowledge in the PNW around him.
Who was it that was in charge of the back shop for awhile, Jim Moses? He had a BBC Red '62 Vette? Bet he still owns it to this day, would love to see it again.................................
At the old Lynnwood store, the machine shop was run by Ron Moses for many years; last time I saw him, I was doing a CT Scan on his mother in the E.R.. The guy he mentored has now been my machinist for 25 years or more; Dave Peyton. Ron Brown ran the sales floor, with Mike Moody (Moody was an appropriate name for him unless you knew him!) under him; he's the fella that had a gimp right arm. Moody's gone now also; p***ed a few years ago after suffering several strokes. Ron Brown went to work for Exhaust Specialties I think it was, as their roving sales director. Jim Green always treated me right; even gave me parts he could't apparently sell, such as a fibergl***, 56 Chevrolet, front valance pan. Pretty sure Green's son had cerebral palsy, and they took him along to all the races. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
A little late for the OP...but we're here and operating as Seattle_Speed_Shop. We do have a small show room. But most of our sales are done online. Be happy to show anyone around if they'd like
