Your motor is killer, very nicely detailed. The aircleaner needs to be bigger and hide the carb. Yes, change it. Just my opinion though ..... :D

Wrong for the motor. That might look good under the hood of a 54-56 ford maybe but not there. Fab one up or I agree with the modded oil bath version...that would be perfect. Gay? Sorry but that's a kinda juvinile reference to things, dontcha think? My nephew says that all the time and he's 16. I dunno, maybe you're just a kid too.

Yeah I'm just a kid @ 68 last March. As to the Weiand "sticker" it's an engraved plate with drive pins attaching it to the case and I'm afraid if I remove it it may not be polished under it or I'll severly scratch the case gettin' it off.

I'll take the consesus of advice.;) I appreciate all the input it's just there are not many choices out there and most you usually see on a SBC, I was lookin' for something unusual and different. Something more oval may make a better appearance but the blower is not a large one and I really thought something small would less hide the blower and the rest of the motor.

Thanks for all the input guys, I respect your opinions.

As to my sig line. In 1955 I had a '48 Chevy and just HAD to put duals on it. I was 16 and hardly knew the difference between a screwdriver and a socket wrench. My dad was not in the least mechanical. I worked at a swimming pool as a lifeguard during the summer. I bought a split manifold from a guy, some flex pipe and a 2nd tailpipe from Western Auto (remember them?) and one Douglas steel pack from Smitty's Speed Shop. Went to the pool early in the morning and in the parking lot removed the intake and swapped out the exhaust manifold, installed the flex pipe, muffler and 2nd tail pipe. I didn't know not to tighten the 4 bolts that held the manifolds together until they were both bolted solid to the head. Got it done about 11:00 am and fired it up. I had a hell of a vaccum leak on the intake and the sum**** popped and cracked like crazy. I didn't know what to do so I worked all day, got off at about 9:30 PM and drove it home. House we lived in's driveway was about 3 feet away from the house next door. Pulled into the driveway between the two houses and it was rattling the windows and the bricks. Went into the house and my dad was reading the paper. He calmly put the paper down, looked at me and said my tag line. First and only time I ever heard him say the F word. Following that line he said "I don't know what you did to that sum***** but you will undo it tomorrow." My first travel down the wayward path of cars (but certainly not the last):D

Nuff said. He died @ age 87 in 1994 and I still miss him.

The hubcap is kinda plain. If you're looking for an idea, I used an old cake pan cover and striped it. Works great on my dad's 53 Merc.

Been thinking about this and your limited space difficulties. Its a tough call, you want to show off the blower but I think the hide the carb.

Can you use a 4 brl 14inch round aircleaner base that will drop down over the carb some and find a short K&N aircleaner in their catalog that will allow you do put a basic top on it (maybe finned aluminum). I think you need to find something old looking that works with the flattie. maybe even a square base and aircleaner like used on some of the modern cars, (K&N has square aircleaners) then find some finned aluminum to use at an aircleaner. Maybe about 11x14 in size so it hides the carbs and ties into the finned heads...

someone on this board may have some ideas on what to use for a top that has a similar fin design to the heads..

agree with Aman that oval would work also or something non-round. when I said square, I meant something wth rounded corners, not a sharp cornered square.

68? Well that just goes to show ya all that this shit keeps you young. Nice story 'bout yer dad and 1st car thing. I got full time care of my ol man right now. I appreciate the sentiment. I think there are some real good ideas for ya here too. The cake pan thing is pretty kool. But given your space limits I like Boones' idea the best. And since you created an air cleaner with that I'm certain someone wants it for something else. Good luck with it and I hope to see what you come up with.

BTW...that "kid" comment was not a slam, just an opinion.

  18. while the ideas are being thrown out for ya

a lot of stock air filters had limited room
they offset the filter ala old buick straight 8s
or had a sideways mounted round element like some ford sixes
dual quad chryslers had twin elements way off center

soooo how about a remote filter like new aftermarket fuel injected cars use ...a large dia. stainlees tube/tubes and locate the flat round or cylinder type filter where there is room
how about a ram flex tube/stove pipe to the grille opening with cone k/n filter inside
a hole/scoop in the hood above the grille opening like some bonneville cars would use with a straight then curved pipe into the carb throat

or in the gm style the low pressure area at the base of the windshield
notched in the hood at the rear with a more permanent scoop shaped like a rectangle aluminium cake pan with perforated metal cover...

you havea very trick blown engine and currently a bandaid filter setup

    be brave run no hood.......

I agree something like this Moon air cleaner. I believe the single 4 barrel one is a little shorter.

QAs I stated earlier, I appreciate all of your opinions. Thanks in particulay to Boones, Aman and Roupe about the oval type. I ordered this one from Moon this morning for a single 4 barrel. It's 8" W X 15" L X 4" H. Guess I now have a 10-1/2" round garage hanger with a hole in the middle.

Here's a bigger Pic that Roupe posted.

BTW NRFLEMING here's the car with some of the 174 louvers showing.

It's obviously a hubcap, it looks okay maybe on an engine that doesn't have any other goodies on it, I would use something else. Check out some of the stuff from Edmunds which would be period perfect and is being reproduced by somebody.

Yeh, that hubcap has to go. Have you considered getting rid of that holley 4bbl carb too? I don't think it fits in with the flatty either. Maybe some holley 94s (the only good holley carb ever) or an adapter on top of the blower and a pair of side draft carbs? Something to think about anyway.

Well I got the new one from Moon yesterday and installed it this morning. Actually it's not as wide as the hubcap was and I don't like the pink color of the K&N filter but I can prolly get out the shoe polish and do a little coloring. I ended up with about 1" clearance and might see if my machinist can mill some off of the base so it sits lower on the carb so it looks a little better. I had $50 in the eldebrock/hubcap and got $200 in this one so I'm finished with it for this year; maybe try something different next year.......Gotta keep some down money for Hi-test and cruisin' this year.

You can get an element in different colors from other companies... Barry Grant Rush filters are yellow, Accel Cool Blue filters are, well, blue, Green Filter makes them in green...
If you can clean the coloring out of the filter, Green Filter makes oil in different colors...

I'm on hold with their tech guy to see if he knows a quick and safe way to bleach the color out of the filter.

    (*edit*)

Ok, they say if the filter element is 100% natural cotton, you should be able to strip the color out of it with something made by RIT (they make dye for cloth) but he didn't know what they called it. It can be had at Target/WalMart .

If its synthetic... well, you are out of luck.

just take the filter in the house and use some dish detergent to wash the oil out of the element. let it air dry for a couple hours and you should be able to spray it with whatever filter oil you end up getting.
