Technical 65 Falcon/Comet gas tank???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alteredpilot, Sep 9, 2019.

  1. Tanks Inc lists the fuel tank for the 60-65 falcon as only fitting the 60-63 comet. Can anyone verify this or are the falcon and comet tank for 64-65 the same???

    Thanks in advance!

  2. I've bought several gas tanks from Auto City Classics and they too list tanks for 60-63, nothing about 64/65.

I have a sneaky suspicion the 64/65 tanks may be very similar to the mustang, the mustang was based on the Falcon chassis. HRP

  3. yeah its weird. the tank listed for the falcon is visually the same as the one in the mercury i'm looking at. the dimensions given on the site are pretty darn close too, but i just took a rough measurement.

‘64 Comet tanks are unique. I am not sure but they may fit a ‘65 Comet also. Falcon tanks are not the same as Comet, and early Mustang is also different.
You did not mention for what vehicle you need a tank.

  5. I need a tank for a 65 comet, well specifically i needed a tank with an in tank fuel pump, and tanks inc has one for the falcon, but not for the mercury.

  6. The '64-65 Comet tanks are larger (20 gal IIRC vs 16 for the Falcon) because Mercury stretched the Comet wheelbase in '64. The Falcon (and Mustang) tank will be too small to fill the opening in the trunk floor. The tank fill is wrong too.

You might look at '66-69 Fairlane/Torino tanks. May be a closer fit, but you'll have to modify the fill neck. The '66-69 Comet/Montego tanks are side-fill and won't work.

Actually, the Mustang shares more parts with the Comet than the Falcon. The Comet rear suspension was used, as well as most of the interior trim bits. Whatever Falcon parts that are shared are also used on the Comet, but the Comet had a number of unique bits that made it onto the Mustang

  7. that would explain why the measurements we took exceed the specs given by the manufacturer for the falcon tank.

thankfully the company i work with offers a retrofit pump setup so i can use the tank thats in the car now..

    Thanks for the insights!

As a former '65 cyclone owner, I don't believe anyone makes a 64-65 Comet tank. Best idea is to have your old one rebuilt, if possible. I modified my trunk floor to accept a '69 Mustang tank, which are readily available.

Not trying to hi-jack the thread but the tank from a 66 GT350 will bolt into a 62 Falcon. Guy down the road from me back in the mid-70s wrapped his GT350 around a telephone pole. I took a look at all the parts I thought would interchange with the Falcon. The 20 gal. gas tank was a bolt in, the really heavy front stabilizer bar let me throw the Falcon into a corner and it never even tried to roll. Of course, with the thundering 144 cu. in. power house up front, it's not likely that it would.

Actually there is a reproduction tank out there for the 64-65 Comets (except wagon) they are not galvanized, they are painted a silver color.

I have a 1970 Mustang tank in my 1960 Falcon. It bolted right in. Since I moved my muffler from next to the tank, to under the back seat, it fits fine. Went from 14 to 22-gallons in the process. The filler needed minor adaptation.

Not sure about the Comet, but it is worth checking out.
