Hey guys, I've been helping my brother in law work on his impala. We have rebuilt the engine and got most of the front suspension redone. We are on to the wiring now. He has an internally regulated alternator and an HEI distributor. Do any of you guys have a good wiring diagram for the ignition switch, HEI, starter, alternator, that shows how all of those are wired up to the battery and such? It has a later 350 in it. Thanks in advance for all help.
Just remember that the 62 Impala came from the factory with a generator and not an alternator so the wiring may be different. I would think that any normal wiring diagram would be the same. You could go online and find one.
You can buy a wire harness for the engine with your upgrades. It will plug in at the firewall like factory.
^this. I cannot remember how much it was exactly, but this is what I did on my mom's8 when I was getting it running for her. I used American autowire. I do know that it came with a different horn relay, and the direct wiring for hei, alternator. I bought an ***embly manual with all the wiring diagrams in it. I also looked it up on google as well.
I'm thinking that 62 could be had with a generator or an alternator. Alternator being extra cost. GM archives show a 30 amp generator as standard and three choices of amp rating alternators as options. It wasn't a very spendy option but some guys were cheap and others didn't want to try something new. A guy has to work his way to 62 Chevrolet though. https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-heritage-archive/vehicle-information-kits.html
Mr 48 Chev, I have a 62 Impala and it has the original generator. All the 63 Impalas I have seen come with an alternator.
Not hard to do. All you need is keyed 12 volt to the + on the hei. And wire alt + terminal to the battery cable. I use the battery terminal om thrvstarter for the alt. Easy job
From the archives a 30 amp generator was standard but you could order an alternator as an option. Remembering when they came out a lot of the old farts still wanted generators rather than those "new fangled" alternators. All alternators in 63 though. I remember some older guys argument being that you could push start a car or truck with a generator and a dead battery but that didn't work with an alternator as it needed voltage to it to get it to work.
I guess they never got the memo at our dealership because every 62 that came in here all had generators.
