How far out can a large journal 327 SBC be bored?

    Boys,

    How far oversized can a large journal 327 SBC be bored out?

    .030 is best I have one that is .040 but it runs pretty hot, but I am in Tex*** where that would make a big difference
     
  3. .060 is probabilly the limit. i'd have it sonic tested too

    Thanks everyone.

    I just popped off a head & it is at .030 now. TRW high dome pistons w/ 2.02 492 heads.

    Guy said that it spun a bearing, but all I see is one on the double springs he had on it broke on the intake side. Crank & bearings look great!

    I don't know waht cam is in it, but I'm sure someone was beating the piss out of the motor. It is very clean & you can still see the cross hatch pattern on all of the bores.

    Not going to use it for a while. Even us flathead guys need a SBC laying around.

    I have bored them to .060 but would not go that far if you don't need to. Always try to save some for the next rebuild. At .030 you can always go to .040 next. Sounds like the bore is fine now and it's a motor with real potential.
