Good morning. Was looking for a 327 for several years that was a 'builder' and came across a gent who says that he's got one with the double hump heads. I try and try to get out to his place, but time (don't understand why people have a cell phone and NEVER setup their voicemail..) and funds keep getting in the way. Well, finally got together with him and went out to see it. It's been sitting outside for what looks like years, by the cracks in the tire it's sitting in.. BUT, it turns slightly (no bolt in balancer and didn't have anything to pry the flex plate that well) Plugs still in it. And it was getting dark and the flying critters were looking to eat us alive! Here's the Castings/stampings on the block: L/R - 3858180 Date - D 80 6 (that's the way it appears to be spaced. But most likely April 8, 1966) And the front pad looks to be T0505HCR. The story he told me was that it came from a '66 Impala SS, convertible that the owner at that time, was restoring/working on it and had the engine rebuilt, then he took ill and p***ed away, so I don't have any more info on it. It looks like it was painted not really long ago and the bolt on parts look to be pretty clean (for sitting outside) And it must have been a 'shop' that did it since the 'stock' plastic coated plug wire holders were still bolted on. Also, had the stock cast iron intake with rags stuffed in it. So I think it's gonna be worth it to get and investigate it. I'm doing some horse trading on it, since he needs a Chevy V8 runner that I can get from pulling favors from other friends, so it's not going to cost me a whole lot in CASH!! I've read dozens of threads about the semi-elusive 8180 block, but so far it's a 275hp that I can come up with off the top of my head. Then, some say the small journal started in '67 so I'm ***uming it's a small journal. And that the 180 block doesn't take many over bores from thin cyl walls.(?) Won't know the over bore or crank until I actually get it home and pull some stuff apart to see if it's a cast or steel crank. What can you guys tell me and what to look out for? (Mr. Squirrel??) Thanks for your time. E
HC is a 66 full size car 327 with 4bbl 275 hp and PG transmission. It was ***embled on my fifth birthday The R at the end signifies a replacement engine, at least that's how they did it around that time. I have a big block with the R at the end of the number, also.
Thank you Sir. So is that correct in saying it's a April 08, 66? Small journal correct? (won't know if it's steel or forged just yet) I know the "T" is Tonawanda NY, but any insight on the 0505HC ? ...not that it really matters. I just gots ta know.. It's Hopefully going to get a late version 8-stack in front of either a 2004r, cable-7004r. Lexus IS300 RWD sedan w/3.90 LSD 26.5" tires, 3400lbs. (can't afford the LS style engine $wap$) Plus, the knees and shoulders are getting more arthritic. ..It handles MUCH better than ANY of my old cars put together.. (And insurance says it's a 'sub-compact' 4dr = cheaper) So I might just see how many rpm's the autos can handle lol. E
It should have a forged steel small journal crank. We use to identify an early 327 by looking between the freeze plug and timing cover to feel a slight imperfection in the block casting, kind of a little bump. This distinguishes it from 283 s and 350 s. I know, 350 s were not available in 1966 but out of the car, like in this case that little imperfection will tell. Only small journal 327 s had this imperfection. All other small blocks are smooth in that area.
0505 means it was ***embled on my birthday (May 5th). HC is the code for a 1966 full size car 275 hp 327 with Powerglide transmission. (and do yourself a favor, don't mention what it's going in, around here. this site is for old hot rods, not late model foreign cars)
I have that exact motor; just rebuilt it a couple years ago. Had with a flat cam lobe. The chevy-camaro.com site shows HCR as 275HP w/ Rochester and HCH for the Holley equipped. Though I have never seen one with a Holley, but some with the AVS Carter. It now runs smooth as silk, set up as a 300HP clone for 62-65. The casting numbers are the same so it looks like it belongs in my 62.
Oh yeah...the R and H thing about carbs...I heard that once, and forgot about it. Makes sense! thanks
