1952-59 Ford Electric choke

I have a 65 FE 390 running a Pertronix ignition and a 1 wire alternator in my 58. Where do I hook up the wire for 12V electric choke?

 

If I remember correctly they say to not connect to the alternator, but any other place hot with the key on should work.

 

The "I" terminal on the solenoid is where I hooked mine up also is the 12 volt source for the HEI, I also have a one wire alternator.

Before wiring it to the solenoid "I" terminal, check for voltage there with the key on. On some solenoids, the "I" terminal is used to by-p*** the coil resistor and is only hot when the key is in the start position.

The two small posts on the solenoid are "I" and "S" when the key is on so is the voltage on "I", "S" = Start

 

12 volts to the I terminal. With the key on or off. Something is off.

 

Are any wires connected to the "I" terminal? If so, disconnect them and measure again.
If you still have voltage, reverse the sides of the battery/starter cables on the solenoid .

 

Some diagrams of the soleniod show the "I" terminal to be connected directly to the starter post, while others show it separate but energized with the starter.

 

With only the battery and starter hooked up [No wires to the small terminals] I'm getting 12 volts to the "I" terminal, key on or off.

 

Car starts but won't turn off with the key. Bad solenoid?

 

The only wire from the ignition switch to the solenoid should be the "start" wire to the "s" terminal on the solenoid. To have the "I" wire hot with ignition only would require a wire from the "I" or "acc" side of the ignition switch to the "I" terminal on the solenoid. If not, how would the solenoid know when the ignition is on?

 

Reverse the battery and starter cables on the solenoid.

 

With the key in the off position you should have zero voltage at the "I" terminal. Is it possible the ignition switch is wired wrong and sending current when it's off ? Did you get your ignition and choke connections worked out?

 

Kick myself in the **** for not going electric choke on my car. Makes life a whole lot better on cool days.
