Got a question thats been bugging me for years and now that I'm finally buying a motor I need some help. I have always loved the looks for the dual quad long ram intakes that came on the 413/383 from the early 60s. I know they are hard to find but thats what I want to run and so now the engine I'm buying is a late 60s 383 I believe. I'll check when I get it because it was only 100 bucks and it has an extra set of 60 over pistons. And so I've been wondering for a good 3 years will this intake fit on the newer 383? I get alittle confused when I read info on how there were b and rb 383s and I just need to know even if a little modifying is needed, if they will fit? Thanks.
Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the long ram intakes were only available on the raised block motors (late 50s or very early 60s raised block 383, 413, 426 wedge, or a 440) . If that is true, then some modification of the cross over tube between the two intake sides will have to be performed, a raised block is 1" wider at the intake surfaces then a low block (361, mid 60s on 383, & 400). As far as the heads are concerned, all big block Mopars (except Hemi) heads will interchange. There are some differences along the way, but they are basicly the same heads. Early big blocks had the valve covers held on with 4 bolts, instead of the 6 bolts the newer heads have, the front and back corner bolts were not in the old heads. The max wedge heads were raised block heads that have very large intake ports, they will bolt onto a low block, but there are no intakes with large enough ports made for the low block. Through the performance years Mopar played with intake and exhaust ports and valve size. Through the emmision years the heads recieved hardened seats and larger combustion chambers, and holes in the exhaust ports for the air pump system. Other then the new big dollar aftermarket heads, probably your best bet is going to be either install the hardened seats in the performance era heads, or do some milling and/or port work to the emmision heads. If you were looking to throw a set of heads on and go, I'd go for the emmision heads, or run what you got, add a lead additive occasionally. And yes that cross ram intake will bolt up to your low block 383 with a little modification. Gene
Thanks for the reply. Yea see I've never been sure either, I've read books and websites but never got a definite answer as to what they came on. Becuase I was just reading my one book and they said that the long ram tubes came on Chrysler 413s in 1960 but from dodge and plymouth in the same year they were put on their 383s. And then I've also read of people getting the intake on late 59 production vehicles. And in 61 its the same again with dodge and plymouth having it on their 383s and 413s. So lol I dont know.
I think the issue that is causing your concern has to do with the 383. For a couple of years Mopar made a raised block 383. It was either in the very late 50s or the very early 60s. (they also made a big block 350 for one year!) If the long rams were available for a 383, it would have been the raised block motor. The raised block 383s got opened up to the 413 and the 383 raised blocks production ended. The long ram intakes were designed for the RB motors so dual 4bbls could be had with the low hood lines being produced at the time and were produced in two versions, one being about 6" shorter then the other. The long ones (early production) had the carbs out past the valve covers and the carbs set lower, almost below the valve covers. The shorter version had the carbs set just outside of the valve covers and set pretty high. You might want to go to www.moparts.com there is a street rod section there, or you could ask on the question/answer board. One of the guys at Moparts is a long ram guy and can give you all the details, probably production #s and part #s. Might take a couple days for him to step up, he is not on everyday. There are also several others that have played with the long rams. Gene
Well I went to moparts and finally got the answer to my questions and so far so good for me. The intake will fit onto a 383, the only thing that may need modifying is the crossover tube and part of it is rubber hose so you can just shorten that. And I should of figured it out a long time ago becuase the heads are no different its just the raised blocks make the heads wider apart so the intake since its seperate pieces it'll still go together.
