53 steering assist

    Did the 53 chevy car,150,210,Bel Air, ever have power steering from the factory, I think it was called steering assist back then, if so anyone know where I might could come up with onw of the original systems?

    Yes! seems to me it drove off the back of the generator. I know they show up on E-bay from time to time, mostly big $$$$$$

    '53 is the first year offered. The unique to P.S. 2 groove harmonic balancer used in '53-4 is a hard one to find.

    53-54 chevy cars had "integral" power steering, built into the steering gearbox, it was not like the 55-64 ram "assist" type.

    Yeah, it was a rather strange setup. It actually looks like a manual box with a power assist unit added to it. It's best to find a car that you can take everything from for the conversion, because the central idler arm for power steering cars is unique as well as that golden double groove pulley.
