I've got the compe***ion plus that was on my M21 out in the shed and a Hurst 3 speed shifter (the good one from years back with bolt on handle) and both and every other Hurst shifter I ever had had to be pulled out and taken apart and cleaned and lubed and put back and adjusted every couple of years.
Hurst still sells most of the pieces to rebuild them and lists them on Ebay in their Ebay store.
You never know how someone has something setup without crawling under it yourself and looking but I'm more inclined to think something internal in the trans than shifter unless the arms just flat aren't on right or are the wrong arms.

This is usually a two person job when the trans is in car.
You need one person under car checking the linkage while you have another person in car shifting.
If there is a bit of slop you may have to cheat the linkage to allow it to properly return to neutral.
This may be why the builder suggested backing off the stops, to allow more movement than needed to allow the shifter to bring the forks into neutral position so the comb unlocks. A bit of a bandaid solution until you can find out what is causing the sticking.

Yep , I said exactly when I should have said similar , I saw the offset in the stick , no visual reference or clear memory for the linkage ,( never paid that much attention .)

After two years of fighting this problem it is fixed. A friend said just buy another new shifter and try it. I told him the one that is in it now is was new and it never worked. (hurst competion) He said buy another one. So as last a last resort( because eagle field drags last weekend) I payed over 4 hundred dollars for a new one. Sure as hell the ****** worked flawless though the whole week end.
Monday morning I called the hurst tech number that was in the new box to see about getting old one fixed or warrantied, and couldn't get any one on the line. So I went on line found out holly owns hurst so I called them. after 25mins I finely got a lady on the line and she gave my a number to call. I called it and a recorder came on and said it was flowmasters. I waited 20 mins while selecting different numbers for different departments.( check this **** out ) after all that time another lady answered and told me to call holly again. So after calling holly for the second time I stayed on wait for 30 mins I gave up.... I am going to try like hell never to buy any thing holly owns now.

But I would like to thank all you hot rod guys that gave me good advice though this whole two year problem. thank you.

Looks like Hurst is skating along just on the name alone. I'm using a 1978 vintage Comp Plus on my car, I just took it apart, cleaned and lubed it, used new shifter bushing and clips. The new clips are even funky so I used my old ones. I'd be interested on who else makes a good 4-speed shifter these days.

If you want to see what I mean about trying to get someone to help me with my shifter. call their number that was in the box with the new shifter.
what really bugs me is that I took 400$ of my hard earned money and freely traded it to the hurst company for their shifter. I valued their product more than I valued my 400$ plus dollars. But they don't think that a customer is important enough to at the very least to have a good number to get a hold of a tech person to ask a question about their product. Now I am a very busy person and have never wrote any thing this long to complain about anything . #$%^ I am pissed
