Can anyone answer whether they have ever seen a 318 Polysphere V8 with hydraulic lifters, ideally a pic would be nice also......lol........thanks, Andyd
I sold some NOS lifters part number 2808385 that were listed for a 59-67 Dodge truck 318. They were hydraulic as far as I can remember.... Edit: I just checked some marine rocker arms down in the basement from a 65 Fury 210 "318" poly and they are adjustable.
And I just checked both a 63 and a 66 Mopar factory parts manual which shows both as 318 with mechanical tappets "lifters".
I had a 66 Plymouth Fury with a 318 poly that had hydraulic lifters. But then I also had another one with solids...
Gary Pavlovich when he built the 402" stroker Poly motor used "high-performance anti-pump-up lifters and hydraulic moly pushrods" which were supplied by Nielson Cams. So they are available. In his article on the stroker he does not list the lifters as being one of the items which interchange between poly and the LA motors. swifty
I've seen literally hundreds of A motors, none ever had juice lifters. There is a listing in one of my manuals that describes a '66-'67 engine as having them, but like I said, never seen it. The LA lifters will fit an A engine, if you can find a cam for them.
Some Canadian cars late into the last production 67 of the poly had hydraulics. I have also been involved in converting them to hydraulics so we could use a modern cam design (68 340 stick grind on 318 poly core. ) Since the stock 318 pushroads are a bit on the soft side it was a good idea anyway. Cost was around $100 and took abot 2 weeks to get here. I just bought a 67 engine for my rail and it was from a 67 Ply but it is a Mopar replacement engine (010 010 030)and so unfortunatley had no hydraulics. Don Need different pushrods to do it right as the hydraulics are taller. I dont think there is enuf adjustment to get by but I might be wrong.
Don, This was a LONG time ago, so things are kinda fuzzy, but when I was 16, I made one engine out of the 2 I had. I swapped the hydraulic lifters onto the (stock) solid cam when I went through the engines (yes I know that's wrong on so many levels...). I actually had to combine pushrod sets, as I bent some trying to bolt the heads on with the pushrods in place (that was a ridiculous feature of those engines). Anyway, it all bolted together and ran hard for many miles. I know I was able to adjust the valves, because that was the engine my dad taught me the "no tick + 1/2 turn" method on. Don't ask me WHY it worked, but no bullshit, there is a way to do it with all stock parts....
Your best bet, for ALL poly questions, is to just send a note to Gary Pavlovich (he is on this forum, just very very quiet...). Use the email feature vs a PM. .
And since I've pointed a few people here today, I'll add a link to the 318 Poly Yahoo Group for posterity: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/318poly/ ~Jason
i sure would like to see a photo of a stock 57-66 318A with hydraulic lifters. show the rockers to prove it.
