Technical Lets see Cars in Tow....gotta get em there somehow

my 39 after a 27 hour round trip to Illinois to pull it out of a barn

 

Kind of disappointed. I thought guys were going to show cars that they were flat towing rather than cars riding on stretchers.

My friends bantam fell apart at the end of the track so I towed him back with my wagon. Luckily I had the rope I use tie the surfboard on the roof.

62 years ago at Orange Show Stadium in Riverside, CA.

 

The only time on a trailer, on the way, in the rain, to get a Safety Inspection, a requirement for registration.

Hello,

The "Touring Pros" from the drag racing world started going to almost every big name dragstrip across the USA back in those early days. Paid appearances, sponsor funded tours, customer appreciation days, obligations to business backers, etc. The only way to find out who was coming to your nearby dragstrip was to look at the weekly Drag News paper. It not only had the latest results from every drag strip across the country, but there were serious articles about the top brands in the industry. (along with stories of those racers who used the brands.)

Some of the earliest top drag racers made the trip across the USA from coast to coast and those that made early U.S. Nationals ½ way across the USA were pioneers. But, two So Cal locals were purportedly labeled as the first “touring professionals” to go from state to state and dragstrip to dragstrip in 1960. Sure, there were those early racers that came out West to race against the top Westcoast builders and racers. Not too many stayed on the coast going to all of the name dragstrips along the way. It was the big money events in So Cal and Northern Cal that drew those early guys.

So, it was a road trip by a well known TV/movie star and his side kick buddy. They were to make the first official state to state, dragstrip to dragstrip tour, of the well know places, to race against the locals. Supposedly, the movie/TV studios had a clause that Tommy Ivo could not drive the tow car all over the USA. So, he had his friend and fellow car club member, Don Prudhomme, drive the big Caddy sedan tow vehicle. As we all know of their exploits and history in drag racing, this tour was what started it all. (Towing all the way across the USA and back to So Cal.)

In his humble beginnings, Tommy Ivo was a Buick guy. All of his hot rods/cruisers and race cars were Buicks or at least Buick powered. He also had a cool 55-56 Buick push/tow car back then.
But, a Cadillac sponsored trailerfor this big time tour? At least there are the same matching hubcaps.

What about hot rods being used as tow rigs? Here's my buddy's survivor '32 Chevy being used to tow our mini bikes at Bonneville.

I know "no pics, didn't happen" but, the first car that I bought on my own was to replace my '55 Chevy totaled by a drunk driver hitting me - had great drivetrain, so was looking for another '55-'57 - found a '57 on a used car lot, at night - "another young guy was just here and has gone to get his Dad, first come first served" - my Dad was out of town on business, so talked my Mom into going back to lot with me - bought it without a test drive - about 5 miles back to home - about 1 mile from home it dies and will not start - so, we go back home to get a tow chain - she is very upset with me (nothing new) because she has never towed a car - we got home very slowly - did do the motor / trans swap and turned into a Cool ride for a High School kid

A T I built this spring and sold to a buddy. He flat towed it from Chicago area to Indy and back for an event.

@Mart it was probably just the rear window falling out!

 

I didn't get a picture on the rollback, but here's my truck about a year ago waiting for a ride.

Pretty sure Orange Show Stadium has been in San Berdoo all these years.

 

Here's my new (to me) '36 Cabriolet getting loaded up at Hamtown Al's in Virginia. It rode at that angle all the way to NY. Unfortunately it caused all the extra parts I bought from Al to slide to the rear of the car...blocking the rumble lid so I couldn't open it. I had to belly slide myself in and out of the trunk, from inside of the car, to remove the parts.
