on those old, in the ground two post lifts, we could raise and lower them separately. he more than likely lifted it by the axle, then set it on the stands and lowered the post to get access to the axle.

As odd as it sounds I think the right angle drive between the engine and quick change is from a street sweeper. Most likely it was used to power the large brush under the sweeper.
I think this car may have been pictured in an issue of Hot Rod Deluxe and I tried to Google a few names of early dragster guys but came up empty.
