It's raining in this part of North Texas right now. I drove my truck (36 Ford) in to work this AM. I just got back in it to move it and noticed how nice and dry it was and that old car smell!:D

Reminds me of my youth when I would buy 48~53 Chevy farm trucks for 50 bucks and drive them till the old six gave up the ghost.

    Love that old car smell!

  2. Yea its right on the edge of being musty I love to get an old one that hasn't been too wet. But i think you and i came frome a world of low cash flow and its just a reminder of simpler times to us.

strange I hate the sour milk smell of the nissan on a hot day no matter how much febreeze my girlfriend sprays in it, but i love the smell of my 40 truck no matter what fluid is leaking from it.

Have you ever noticed how each make of car has it's own smell? I could probably tell what kind of car I was in even if blindfolded!!

  10. I love that smell too...

When I got my car it had a mohair interior, and when we started the process of re-upholstering it, I said to my mom "But what if the smell goes away???"

    Luckily, it didn't.

I've gutted the interior of my Fairlane.

There is literally NOTHING in there 'cept for the headliner.

It still has that smell. I love it.

Its the smell of oldness. The last few years, my garage has taken on the smell of an old garage too. Its like old oil and transmissions and stuff.

Every once in a while I'll get a whiff of catshit, but thats rare. :D

hi RC I'm glad to hear that you still have that truck. I hope it still needs a paint job, too. :D

Its extremely hot here so I set up an aircondtioned room in the corner of my shop for the lathe and the mill along with workbenches and I have been working in there as much as possible. I have been making some small parts on the lathe and the other day I went in and noticed that it smells like machine shops I have been in. How cool!

Painterman...You beat me to the punch on that one...exactly what I was going to say...Someone could start a contest where the contestents would be blindfolded , have them set in different year and makes , and guess what car/truck it is...I think I could guess a Model A or a 55 Chevy..

You have no idea how happy that makes me. I haven't owned a truely old car yet (I've got a '68) but whenever I'm at a car show I always stick my head inside the restored '40s and '50s cars to get that smell. The street rods never have it anymore. I wonder if that smell is actually the car's soul.

Also, speaking of smells, gear lube always makes me think of junkyards.

I was just about to mention my old '67........I kind of miss it to. It was Marina Blue, 383, Torq-Thrust II's and full Hotchkis suspension......I heard from the guy that bought it last summer it was allmost ready for paint........he's going orange with silver SS stripes, I about puked when he told me that. :( :(

I hate orange on muscle cars. It's such a big cliche.

Hearing about all these late models with "the smell" I'm wondering if mine doesn't have it because it's a ragtop. Or maybe I've just stopped noticing it.

  22. That's cool!

My '51 has that combination of leaded-gas, musty original interior, and whatever else...my girlfriend always tells me I smell like old-car. I just say thanks!

Another lover of that old car smell right here. I love "new car" smell, but there isn't anything better than getting in my cutlass on a semi-warm morning and taking a big whiff. I drove it to work today in fact, and it was a good way to start the morning.

I thought some of that rain was going to hit us, but unfortunately it looks like it petered out.

I find that working on plastics has cured me of the New Car Smell enjoyment. Old car smell is far more than just mold release and solvents leeching out of the enterior.

When I was growing up, my brother restored a '62 Olds convertable and gave our garage Old Garage Scent. I ahve not smelled that in any familial garage since but hope to give that smell recepter to my son here very shortly. :)

Just read about a week ago that The "new car smell" was really a health hazard.Nothing more than the resins in all the plastics they're using now.Kinda make you want to puke doesn't it?Dave

I had a friend stop by the house and his 13 year old son said my shop smelled like his grandfather's old garage. I was like yeah....It made me feel good.
