I have a 46 Ford woodie wagon with a 283 SBC hooked to the stock transmission. This set up has no anti-chatter rods. I am experiencing moderate clutch chatter in low gear when I take off. Does anyone have any ideas on how to correct this problem? I have been told that the Hurst mount is the problem but I have run this set up previously on other cars with no chatter. Would side motor mounts eliminate the problem? Any suggestions? Thanks!
The stock steering is also very difficult to turn in a static position on my 46 Ford Woodie. Would a Saginaw 525 box help the steering effort or should I go to the 605 p/s box?
Hurst used to make and sell anti-chatter devices which worked with their saddle mounts. They were angle-shaped and attached with the motor mount bolt. Look in the old mags for more info. They were advertised there. Good luck!
My 39 has little clutch chatter when reversing, especially up a slight incline (my driveway) . I'm planning on making brackets off the bellhousing bolts go attach to the original arms (283 hooked to the 39 trans)
Put anti chatter rods in it, you'll have to make the brackets for the bellhousing end, & modify the stock rods .
A few common chatter things; warped disk, bad flywheel/with burn cracks, bad trans mount, wrong drive shaft angles, motor mounts are now soft. Steering hard;box adjusted too tight,Tiny steering wheel been added, less then car came with, front rims are wrong off set an or tires too wide, running tire psi too low/thinking its a better ride,Steering pitman arm is longer then what came with car. Other things can be wrong, but there's a fast lists.
Check the condition of the rubber biscuits on your transmission mounts. When these are worn or loose you'll get chatter. Same with front mounts on engine. Here's an aftermarket kit that was made for 40-48 Fords. Bolts to bellhousing and hooks to X member. They come up on Ebay once in a while. I remember seeing a posting on Fordbarn of a sketch showing how to make anti chatter rod kit. Go to Fordbarn and do a SEARCH on Anti chatter Rods. Here's a start. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=254926&highlight=anti+chatter+rods
Thanks for all the tips. I will try to make some rods to see if that helps. All parts seem to be brand new with low miles, so the rods should do the trick.
