I think it's a long shot, but there's the possibility of a motorcycle plate being issued with the same six letter/number combination as my YOM plate.

  5. Shoot, you paid big $$$ for the YOM plates, what's another $60? I mean.. it's a big government beaurocracy, you can't fight it and win very often, save the battle for something that really matters.

Oh well. In NY I can get plates on an antique in one day with the right paperwork - even if it didn't come with a registration. Title? Who needs one? ... YOM plates go for about $40 at the car shows for useable pairs.

  6. this could be true, my friend bought a set of '47 plates from pomona swap this year and the guy said they were clear (he went through AAA). called the dmv on monday and they were registered to a '85 or '86 yamaha motorcycle. luckly the guy was honest at the next swapmeet and gave him his money back ($280). found some on epay, called the dmv the day they were set to go off and bought them. i have a set of '47 plates i got for cheap a few years ago at the la roadster show with a wierd number/letter combo and the old license plate guys told me that they would be hit last if at all (so i majorly scored). i've been calling every year to make sure they are still clear.......waiting for my '50 buick 2dr fastback.....some more $$$, time and room.

I had the same problem registering plates on my non-op 51 ford when I lived in CA. Best thing is like most others said.... pay for the reg and put a non op after the year is up.

It's more than just paying the registraton in CA.
The paperwork will get spit back at you if you dont have current insurance on it too.
And that's all electronic notification direct from you ins. company to the DMV so you can't fake it.

I don't really get the desire to have YOM plates on a hotrod or custom anyway.
An original or restored to like new antique I can because it's supposed to look like it did when it was rolling off the showroom floor, but, for instance, a '31 Ford hotrod with a '52 Merc engine and 57 Dodge Lancer hubcaps on it would be running the yellow '56 California plates with a '57 sticker in '57,(year of the hubcaps) it wouldn't have had a '31 plate on it for decades so why fake having '31 plates on a '50's style rod now?

    (No, the DMV won't YOM a '56 plate on a '31 car, unless it's been current reg'd since then I don't think.)

There's a guy who goes to Donut Derelicts who doesn't run a plate at all on his A.
Says he likes the rear end "clean".
He dose have them in the trunk though with bolts and wingnuts and can slap them on the car quick if need be.

  9. yea i forgot about the ins part, when i did the last one about 3 years ago i didn't need the proof then. as far as the yom plates go i like them alot better then the new lame reflector plates and california script. i like the shape of the older ('51 and older) plates. i would rather have what DrJ said above with the '56 or even the black '63 plates i would leave. but all my cars with the exception of my girls '61 bel air ('63 black plate) didn't have plates anymore........yes i buy shitpiles. so it's either the yom plates or the new one's......guess what i picked, but my panel is too new ('64) for yom plates and now looks shitty with the white plates.

Wow, from all the stuff I've been reading on the HAMB lately about the CA dmv (I'm from Jerzy) seems like u CA guys have a clusterfuk of unnecessary, over legislated automobile laws u have to deal with. Sounds like they've got old car owners up against the wall in of all places the birthplace of hot rodding. Is there anyway CA vintage car owners could organize into some sort of "hot rod lobby" with representation from a senator or congressman (who maybe owns a hot rod) and get some relief from the CA dmv burden? There's enough of u guys in the state to organize and force some sort of change pertaining to vintage/classsic car dmv laws. just an idea.

  15. WHAAAAAAAAAAAA!

So what, you're complaining about the rules that we're all (in CA) required to play by? And expecting sympathy, or help justifying why it's OK to be a dick to an employee who wasn't properly trained and/or informed by their superior?

Can't help you there. Do your research and be prepared

  16. I was going to bring up the whole insurance thing. My paperwork was held up in Sacramento, until I puchased ins.

    CALIFORNIA DMV LEADER !!![IMG]

  20. Here in Oregon I had to take my 52 ply down to remove the Calif plates and get new Oregon plates. that means she has to come out of the aircond building into the 70 degree weather! so she opens the door and no vin plate! oh god world coming to an end. I explaned its a motor vin car and the pink has the motor vin and body run number witch is on the door jam. she asks how do I know this isnt a stolen car with your old motor in it. I said the run number.! she I sware phoned the Oregon state Patrol and reported my car as a possable stolen car. I couldnt beleave this shit.
The stater got there looked at the numbers and ask what the issue was? she said she wanted the whole car checked. I had to have another stater at the local county yard check the car by number and state that the car was clean. After three months of work and waiting I took all the paper work down and guss what she said her inspecter hadnt checked the car I told her she could call them and complain I was done and my car is clear. she still refused to give me tags.I had to hull the car over to the next city DMV and guss what I got everthing in 20 min, its unreal what these
state employees can get away with and use our tax dollors to do it !

Move. Leave the state. Vote with your feet. It's not that hard.

I did it as a kid in the late 1960's and moved to Maine from New York State. It's easier than you think, I had a wonderful time and they were glad to have me and my fenderless cars. Saved a fortune in taxes over the years.
Now, nearing retirement I moved to Ohio--near relatives--but may move further south if they don't get a hand on liberalism and taxes.

I don't understand why people put up with intolerant and abusive people and govenments when moving where you really want to be in life is so easy. It might be a struggle short term but it is done everyday. Just my personal opinion.
