Hi there I'm new to this forum but I have a 1955 Pontiac star chief that the transmission is starting to go out of I was hoping someone in here knows a good place to find these transmissions for sale as most shops in my area don't want to really work on it. I live in South Central Pennsylvania, Shippensburg pa 17257. Thank you

David, might want to let people know where you are so they can better recommend someplace.

There are actually some old, single coupling, Dual Range Hydra-Matics for sale in the cl***ifieds here, and parts from a former builder. One trans even has a Borg Warner R-10 overdrive unit adapted to it!!! 55 Pont should be a slant pan (some 56 Ponts also used the slant pan; other 56 Ponts used the dual coupling Hydra-Matic), same slant pans as the 54-56 Olds did; they only have ONE forward band that is EXTERNALLY adjustable, while all the other dual range hydra-Matics, both are adjusted externally. There is also a Hydro group here on the HAMB; may want to contact some of those guys. LOTS of parts on E-Bay, and some complete transmissions from time to time. Then there are the flat pan Hydro's, that were't designed for your car, but the parts are the same for the most part. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

I have 1955, '52. and '57 Pontiacs The 1955 slantpan is easy to rebuild. Pull it out, and pull it apart on your workbench. Lay out all the parts and inspect. Get a manual of course. I bought a rebuild kit on fleabay for $298. Cleaned. ***embled everything. In re reading the manual, I realized maybe I hadn't checked the oil sleeve for flow. At 2:30pm I started to tear it down again. Turns out I had checked that sleeve. Re ***embled the whole thing and done by 6:45. Simple and fun.
