What should a guy look for to put a top loader trans behind a flathead six? I'm ***uming a pickup. I'm piecing together a single seater and have access to an early 50s Dodge 6 but it has an auto behind it. I'm thinking car trans had side shift but a top loader would work the best for my application. Help me MOPAR GURUs.
a Ford Ranger/Mazda pickup 5 speed from the mid '80s is a fairly easy adaption to the Plymouth/Dodge short bell housing (Dodge thru '54 is long). There was a guy here on the HAMB who did that a couple of years ago on his '49 Plymouth. A search 're '49 Plymouth would probably turn it up. As I recall, it was an aluminum plate drilled for the bell housing and transmission with an appropriate center bore...etc. Ray
Thanks, I'm trying to keep it TROG worthy. I will never get out that way but want to keep the car all late 40s/early 50s era. Sorry should have mentioned that in the ***le.
Pre-war Dodge or Plymouth stuff for the bellhousing & trans. Desoto & Chrysler offered floor shift OD until '38. Dodge truck for the clutch & flywheel if used hard ... all that Chrysler running gear bolts together if you have the right combo. The '38 Imperial trans was reputed to be as strong as a Packard or Buick.
DO NOT get the standard trans setup from a Fluid Drive. You will not be happy with it for your use. Go to http://p15-d24.com/ and tell the folks what you are doing. You will probably be able to trade your automatic setup for what you will need.
I might be missing something here but wouldn't a 3 speed manual top loader out of the era dodge/plymouth cars and trucks work for you?
Dont know **** about Dodges, Im ***uming the cars had side shift for the column. If its anything like a Ford I should be looking for a truck. Thats why I'm asking.
My '36 plymouth is a top loader. As mentioned, go to the P15-D24 site. A wealth of info and very knowledgable folks.
Chrysler Corp went column shift in 1939, '39 Ply. Road King may still be floor shift. As answered above - any floor shift MoPar trans from '35 to '38, or 3 speed from a truck is what you're looking for.
Are the 217 compatible with 230s as far as the bellhousing mounting up? Sent from my SM-N960U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
