    I've got a three box collection of stamps, slow sellers, but is a quiet and relaxing hobby. Mint unhinged are the best, but there those that buy the heavily canceled ones, why I don't know, just trying to make a buck,. By the way that maroon roadster is really nice looking, if it drives out of the garage that is ok too. Bob

    Thanks! I got some miles on her this summer, would have been more but I'm still chasing I few little issues from the 6 year build. Or to put it in other words, I'd rather be killing bugs head-on - than chasing them.

    *****y ****box dirt track cars that never got fixed up for the next weekend is not what the hamb is about.

    oh, and some lil johnny ratboy had to chime in with the hate about old guys.

    A nice paint job draws attention to a car, for all the good reasons. Do I want that much attention... no. My car has a nice body, was primed maybe 2 decades ago and could stand to be re-primed and sealed. If I could find someone to prime the whole dealie and squirt some single-stage white on it for around $6000, I would. If it ties up the car in paint jail, the appeal wanes real quick.

    The HAMB guys really ripped me a new one when I called the 2016 AMBR " cookie cutter/belly ****on. A 32 roadster with one of those 6 figure paint jobs. And that is all it had. Maybe all the fasteners were clocked. Whoopy!.

  6. It doesn't appear that most of these "patina cars" are being driven much...


    I can see both sides of the argument. My 52 Dodge is a patina car. I believe it is original paint. I have focused on mechanicals for the 5 years I have owned it. But I am at the point that I am tired of the patina. Two months ago, I hand waxed the doors, trunk and rear quarters. I believe the front sheetmetal and rear fenders were painted elsewhere in the factory because those didn't hold up as well as the rest of the car. So those areas I just wiped down with boiled linseed oil. It all blended in quite well and I am pretty happy with the fact that it doesn't look old and faded out anymore. That being said, I do plan on making custom body mods and repainting the car at some point.

    My other project, a 59 Apache, is completely pieced together. I have used NOS parts wherever possible and bought the best used stuff I can find. I am more concerned with getting it on the road right now. But I plan on having the body fixed in stages. Each winter I will have another section done. That why I can drive and enjoy it, and when it gets parked for winter, it will come back in the spring with more of the body fixed. Despite the fact that I will drive the $hit out of it, it WILL have a nice paint job. Mainly because I have never owned anything that had nice paint

  8. Just after high school I actually attended a Body school. it was one of those Man Power govt deals. I actually got paid a small stipend to attend. And I fixed a rear ended collision 65 mustang. and had the guts to paint it with black acrylic enamel. Yes it was shiney with chrome wheels. and it got attention. From the Cops. They loved to stop me and write a ticket. And it was a POS. drove terrible. the headliner filled with air at speed and set on your head. rattled and wasn't fun to drive. I was kinda **** about the paint. I went back to driving a 62 ford gal. White with red interior. nice interior. handled good. it had a 352 FE and a three on the tree. and It was wrecked when I got it. so I installed a black 61 front cap. The tickets stopped and it was fun to drive. I didn't care if anyone set on the hood or touched it.

    I spent days on this paint job. 1981. I wanted to make a big splash at the last race of the year. The Nashville 400. Intake gasket failed in the race. Sold it for $18,000.00 less engine. img359.jpg img133.jpg It went to California. RV dealer kept it in his show room for 1 year.

    If I spent that time and money on a nice paint job I would be to afraid to drive.

    Yeah, this thread has gone completely off the rails. Making comparisons about the body and paint work on show cars, or even decent cruise night drivers, to purpose built dirt track cars isn't even an apples to oranges comparison. Probably closer to apples to briefcase comparison, where there's no feasible correlation between the two.

    I seen that car at All- American 400 (or i think it was that car) I said to my wife "that guy has to be a Hot rodder. I still remember That car.Even ole Red Farmer's car had gold Scallops. Of course it was always beat to **** cause he ran all over the country.
     
  13. The top three series of NASCAR of leave pit road with dust on the during, qualifying they return with the dust still on them because the air they are p***ing thought never touches the surface of the car. There is a boundary layer.
    So glossy or flat paint makes on difference.
    These cars spend more time in the wind tunnel then Formula 1.
    There are power house teams running flat black cars.
    They spend hundreds of thousands, millions of dollars to make their cars thousandths of seconds faster.
    I doubt very much they would be running cars with flat paint if they didn't feel they were every bit as fast as the gloss paint cars.

    I daily drove this car for 4 years. It takes me everywhere I need to go except when the 3-1/2" clearance on the dropped axle starts pushing snow. It got a lot of attention at gas stations or anywhere I might park it. My car stayed like that for 4 years mostly through sheer laziness. Then I spent $1200 on paint and supplies and painted it with acrylic enamel with hardener in a visqueen paint booth in my shop. $260 per gallon for the Washington Blue, about the same for the black. I wouldn't even consider myself a good amateur painter. I just put it on thick enough so I don't sand through during cut and buff, which I am pretty good at.

    Now the car gets a whole lot more attention than it did before with its new shiny coat. My point is any car can be painted and not spend a fortune. It is a lot of work, but I'm almost 70 and I got it done. You just have to get off your *** and do it. From my experience, the general public likes a shiny car. Me too.

    Art takes time and that is what those big buck cars are. Good for those that can afford to have them created
     
  17. @The37Kid you got me doing what I have be complaining about everyone else doing.
    Coming from an oval track background I did not think about fact not everyone would see what I see here.

    That is the design and layout of the rear suspension.
    A split buggy spring one left one right, with a dead perch on the left and a slider on the right.

    As the car enters the turn and weight is transferred the springs flatten out. The left spring pulls the rear end housing to the left. The slider or the right gets more travel with less friction.
    The end result is with the rear shifting to the left the car turns quicker in the corner.
    A lot of thinking and fab went into building that type of a set up.

    As for the welds E-6010 or E-6011 pipe rod, not pretty.

    Rust is rust and a vehicle with rotted panels that you can stick your hand through is not a patina car nor is it a survivor as it has not survived.
    This Merc has real "patina" Original pant that will still pick up a shine that is worn though in a few places. That due to the tarp that the previous owner who had been a customer of mine when I worked at a parts house years ago that didn't drive the car because the gas gauge didn't work. He couldn't grasp the concept of fill it, drive X miles and fill again.

    The paint is like your grandpa's favorite pair of dress cowboy boots that he only wore when he was going somewhere dressed up a bit but that got polished every time he wore them. Or that well cared for but old saddle that your old cowboy friend has that the seat is worn slick but shows that it has always been cared for and not neglected.

    Fake patina is just lame. I saw photos of a truck that a guy had put a pretty decent home paint job on the other day and then sanded through the paint in spots to have "patina" It he had just driven the truck for a few years it would create it's own patina.
