Pete robinson is Wearing His Usual Smile. This photo Shows The 2 Inch Blower Drive (a 3 Inch Version Weighed A Few Pounds More, So He Rejected It) System That He Used For His Early ’Cammers. He Had No Belt Problems. But A Year Later, Blower Overdrive Dictated The 3 Inch Setup. The Cams In This Engine Were Still Chained Together.

Harvey Crane Made His Dynamometer Available So Pete Robinson Could Validate The Theory That Cam Chain Stretch Was Retarding Timing And Exploding His Superchargers. For Proof, He Rigged Degree Wheels, A Strobe Light, And An 8mm Movie Camera To Record The Phenomenon.

I'm thinking that his suspicions were correct, that's why he designed and ran the gear drive system for the cams.

@427 sleeper nailed it he proved the cam stretch and went on to develop a gear drive.

  10. Cool.

Seen the photos of the gear drive set-up but didn't realise the events that led to it.

Were Mickey Thompson, Tommy Grove, Gas Ronda and the rest using this gear drive setup?

It's a hell of a story. He HAD a redone 1961 Starliner and was at a car show and some guy said I want to buy it to add to my 1961 collection. At first he said no. Thought about it and said ok went to the other guys place and he had an indoor museum type place with many "good" fords and several Cammer engines.

The original guy said I have one condition I want one of these cammers. Deal was done and the cammer went to him and sat for several years.

He then began to miss his 61 and went looking and found one to restore found one and it became the new home for the cammer.

I love this truck, and one of the most bad ass engines built.

^^^^ Coyote engine, NOT a cammer despite the faux rocker covers. No timing chain cover or distributor plus WP and outlet are different as is intake etc. Here's another similar set up built by Hollywood hotrods
