Just bought this sedan, I'm 72 and always wanted one. Just gotta decide which is the best way to get this thing lowered.

 

How low are you trying to go? Easiest way to do in a day, 3 inch lowering leaf springs, blocks and Aerostar coil springs for the front. The rear leaf springs and blocks can be had at Shoebox Central, probably run 3-400 for both, and the Aerostar coils springs can be gotten on amazon for about 55 dollars. I did the springs and coils on my 51 and am pretty happy with the stance.

This is mine from a while back it was my daily driver but now it’s in the garage with its top being chopped and I’m going to build a new chassis from scratch to handle the 427 SOHC I’m putting in it this go round. But I have the 2” dropped rear leafs with 3” lowering blocks and the front I have new stock springs with Fatman dropped spindles and the steering arms that go with it. It is a total of 5” drop front and back and drove and handled like a dream. 347 small block with a C4 and factory rear with the 4:11 gears, a/c, power windows you couldn’t ask for a better car to own.

Here's mine, been on it about a year and a half. All new 8BA runs great. All new steering steers good. Bucket seats are out of my attic, hopefully just temporary. Just finishing up all new side glass and all the fuzzy strips and channels and rubber moldings.......talk about some fussy work! New blackwall bias tires. Starting to think about getting a tag for it:

 

3/4 race stroked and bored 2 carb Flattie pushing a T5 into an 81 8" =
daily driver

 

Thanks for all the info, rainwolf ! That's about as low as I want to go. Mine is just a little too high for me right now.

Added this beautiful 50 to my garage, built on the east coast now on the west coast, owned and painted by Richard Glymph at one time and a few others including John Rose. Anyone have any additional history on it? Flathead, 12-Volt, Disc Brakes, Volvo Steering, Fat Man spindles, dual exhaust, fake spots, Bull Nose hood and Desoto side chrome, Sombreros with Ford centers, stunning interior, rear vents removed, lowered. I have had to give it a good grease job, wheel alignment and adding a PowerGen.

 

Hello, any chance anyone has any pics of the original front chassis rails? So either a bare chassis pic or one with no front on it. Would like one showing the shape of the rails ideally, thanks.

Here’s my 51 as she sits today ... gotta lower the ass a bit but diggin’ the look with the skirts .
She’s running a 350 out of a 74 Vette with an automatic trans .
Paint/interior work are hopefully in the not so distant future .

Generally speaking, no . A 1949-1951 Ford is considered a shoebox.

 

Thats a real smuggling car....

 

Not sure if I've posted these... my first custom. These were about 15 years ago I was 19 or 20. 226 flat six 3 speed... so much fun. I miss this type of car, not perfect but perfect for what I used it for. It was my daily driver.

Here is my mild kustom 1951 Ford Victoria. Nosed, decked, frenched headlights, hood is filled peaked and louvered, 54 Chevy grill with extra teeth, smoothed 50 Ford bumpers, 50 Ford taillight bezels with lee lenses, fox craft skirts, 57 Caddy caps on bfg 6.70-15s.

Good thread here,lots of pics and info. I have always loved the shoeboxes and finally bought one 2yrs ago. Im going to build it as a 50s mild custom like an 18 year old would have in the day. Tail dragger,bubble skirts ,flipper caps .spots etc. I do like the smoothed and lowered look but I want this to look like it came out of a 60 yr storage. The car came out of Texas and is almost rust free but has lots of dents. I feel very fortunate to have such a solid car. The flathead needs to be overhaled so I am using a 283 for now but will leave the car all stock so the flathead can be used in the future. I was going to sell my shoebox but this thread has given me new inspiration. Thanks everyone who has posted and please keep the pics and build threads comming!
