Technical How to grease on jackstands and not end up with grease all over the place.

I work fairly clean, but crawling around under the car in weird positions results in failure to "manage" where the grease goes.

All over my hands, arms, floor, grease gun, tools if involved, etc.

The only thing that I think has truly helped is a head band LED light which eliminates the tangle or corded lights or even cordless hand-held lights.

Surgical gloves may make things worse because when working with bare hands, I'm hyper aware of where the grease is.

My compressed air grease gun air hose is probably necessary since my full size pistol grip grease gun requires extra pumping effort when effort should be focues on the zerk connection.

I'll bet there are better zerk "couplings" that grab and seal better (and detach easily.)

Grease gun oozes liquid out the end where the pump rod is. Maybe a different type of grease where the oils don't separate?

Managing rags used to wipe excess off is another issue.

I sure hope there are better zerk nozzles. Mine is hard to go on and harder to remove.

    The sacrificial rag.

I'm going to get one of those LnL's or a Lincoln 5900.

However, saw a video on the Univer-Co locking coupler that is small and compact like a standard one - perfect for U-joints perhaps. It snaps on but to remove, there is a small ring in the back you pull - almost like an air coupler. Issues the video found with it was it was not capable of pushing grease through a dried up/clogged fitting (leaked grease) and it was difficult to grasp the ring with greasy fingers.

...need to do something with the drooling grease gun - maybe a baggie or diaper(!) haha

I can walk within three feet of my grease gun and get it all over me. I reckon it just jumps on me......

  7. Ummmm- I thought you always get a little grease on you when doing a service. I use a manual pistol style grease gun and hold the hose on the zerk with the other- follow up with a rag or paper shop towel that gets tossed out after the job is done. I don’t know any other way - and I make a habit of not wearing a suit when I do service work.

You could always take the car to one of the modern commercial service centres and ask them to grease it, then stand back as they get the puzzled look of "where do I put the grease"?

I have a “ pistol grip” grease gun that I use. Hold it it one hand and use the other hand to hold the grease fitting coupler on straight. If I have a problem I have a high pressure lever action for that. Thought I would get fancy with one of those hand held air powered guns, but could never get it to work right. At work I had a barrel air powered grease gun that worked great. My Dad alway said, on the ranch, “grease is cheap! Use it! “

I have two small (3 oz.)manual pistol guns from HF. One has the barrel straight and the other has barrel at 90 degrees.

I use disposable blue paper shop towels.

This creates the least mess of all my tries.

Also have a needle that I use occasionally. Put a zerk on it so I can just pop it onto the grease gun. Saves the mess of removing and installing the female fitting on the gun.

Also, I have been using the green marine grease the last couple years on my spindles. Doesn't seem to dry out and get sticky after getting wet. Yes, I seem to drive in the rain a lot.

I knew an old timer that had a garage and he wore white shop shirts. The grease never got beyond his wrists. He had a nephew that he was bringing on and his uncle used to tease him how dirty he got - it's a wonder he could get his shirt cleaned it got so bad just in one day.

Regarding wiping off he excess grease - might be better to do this at the very end otherwise now juggling: 1) gobs of grease in rag, 2) grease gun, and 3) coupling.

...just recalling... to minimize the oil that drools out the push rod end after a gun is left sitting for a while, I used to store my guns with the rod pulled all he way out so there was no pressure on the grease forcing oil past the rubber piston. I sort of quit doing this because it took up too much room where I keep my guns now.

The little cartridges, can't get the good greases for them. But they are quite handy. - I've got 2.

Lol. Every time I pull out my grease gun to use, which is not very often, I can never remember how the damn thing works. Half the time no great comes out, and that's when things get real messy. I curse whoever invented the damn thing.

Oh Noooooo, the Pro Lube 6-jaw small diameter locker $25 shipped on Amazon. NOTE: One guy on Amazon complained the KY+ still had to be held on zerk negating one-hand operation. Frankly, this one looks even smaller in diameter which is my criteria due to pesky U-joints.

I'm not going to compare the barrel diameters and buy the smallest.
    KY+ = 0.578
    ProLube (GROZ HC-21) = 0.672
Ordinary coupler = (very close to KY+ will populate soon)

    I already ordered the KY+

interesting. I don't think I have ever looked at a car project and thought "how will I do this without getting dirty?"
