I have putting together a 55 olds with a 324 with a rochester 4gc carb. got it running in early spring and it ran fine. now when i start it up the idle is horrible and acts like it wants to stall when i put it under a load, but when it warms up and the thermostat opens the thortle respone improves and also dievability but still seems to be off a touch. i could take out the thermostat for a temp. fix but trying to get rid of problem completly. any help is greatly appreciated.

  2. Sounds like maybe the thermostat thing is just a coinsidence. I bet it's a carb problem or vacuum leak, possibly timing way off. Yanno also when a distributor is 180 out it acts like that. Just throwing some more ideas out there. Have another carb you can try?

Did the problems start before or after you rebuilt the carb?

Mine does the same thing on occasion, usually it is the choke on the carb getting stuck. I do have a lot of rust in my tank that sometimes gets by the screen in the fuel pump though ( I never got around to putting a filter inline I dont have that much of a problem). I have also had bad plug wires numerous times, a miss with the engine under load is probably caused from a bad wire or fouled plug, which could also cause the poor idling.

Also if you take out your themostat you are going to take longer to warm up, you would prolong getting your car up to temp where it runs better.

  7. Removing a thermostat should never be an option. It is there for a purpose.
An engine cannot operate until it is at proper temperature. Look elsewhere.
