When purchased my Model A it had a banjo style rear end. I don’t know anything about it I just pulled it and install a 56 bel air rear end. Can you help me identify possible year and what is worth. I also have a hood I didn’t use as well. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
that is a 1935 or 36 Banjo judging by the wishbone brackets and the drums. 35 36 had the small brackets welded to the axle bells for the wishbones to mount to. 35 has the early ford 5 on 5.5 in bolt pattern in the hubs / drums, and 36 has a wide 5 pattern. But those had mechanical brakes, this looks to have 40 backing plates and drums on it. A real good rear to have. Where are you located? Id be interested in it depending on how far you are from VA.
Those wishbone mounts seem to be under the tubes, not all the way around like 35-36 were. That is a late 32 through 34 rearend, and it's had it's spring hangers cut off the housing ends. It might be worth something for parts, but most guys intending to put it back in a 32-34 would not like the missing spring hangers.
Thanks guys, I guess I am going to tear it apart. I can use the axle tubes. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Nope. The housings with the straight brackets are the "B" style (unsupported pinion), made from the start of 32 to later, then replaced with the supported pinion style shown for the remainder of 32. Carried over thru 33-34 with the only change being length of the driveshaft and torquetube. When looking for the differences, the early style is recognizeable by having a round area around the pinion where the torquetube bolts on. The later 32 thru 34 style is scalloped at the TT flange, and has the angled wishbone mounting tabs.
Interesting.I have had 1 and a seen a friends late '32 rears (scalloped torque tube end)and the brackets are straight or perpendicular to the housings.
Were they in France? Maybe Ford-Europe built things differently? All of the round flange rears I've seen have perpendicular brackets, and all the scalloped flange rears I've seen have angled brackets. But that doesn't mean there couldn't be some crossover in there somewhere. We need David Rehor in here to set us right.
Hi, No not in France.Been a '32 parts hunter for 50 yrs.So far all the orig '32's here I have seen here are the Model A style rear.I am an old 1960's-70's Hot Rod USA guy retired here in France. Those rears I saw and had was when I lived in the High Desert of CA. One was entirely complete as taken out of the car. The other was complete and in parts.I even had 2 extra NOS 18- drive shafts. These late '32 rears are 8 9/16" shorter than a '33-34. I should have paid more attention to the location of where the radius rod attachment to torque tube was.David is not clear in detail his book about these rears -just that they were introduced in Sept'32 and only USA,not export models.
Watching this for more enlightenment. My ‘32 sedan diff has angled brackets, and always thought and was told that it was a ‘34 rear. It’s a New Zealand new car. Now I don’t know.
Late '32 rears had the angled brackets. The radius rods are unique to the late '32 rears since they do not have the bend that is on the early '32 rear radius rods. To @James Haram : Check the gear ratio. If it is 3.54 or 3.78 (not 4.11) the center section has value. I would be interested to purchase the center section if it is 3.54 or 3.78.
